I am currently doing up a late FIA head. It is costing a lot to do up but it
will be worth it.
I had to sell the last FIA head I had due to extreme poverty. I will try to
not repeat that mistake.
A cost breakdown is: - $100 testing for porosity, cracks and hardness. $300
inc freight for hardening the head back to T6 specs. 214N stainless billet
valves tuftrided tuliped and swirl polished are $528. Valve spring pairs
with matched rates $280 a set. New silchrome valve seats and new bronze
guides with 5 cut angles on the seats and the radius blended into the
chambers and face machining back cylinder face and manifold face $650. Flow
matching of inlet ports and flow matching exhaust ports to ensure 80% flow
of inlets $600. 8 new rocker arms (lightened and polished) $240 + time to
modify.
Machining cam tower for flow modifications and to fit cam spray bar $100.
Billet "Clive Cams" camshaft $210.
Titanium valve spring retainers $240.

Total costs for the head will be approx $3200, plus manifold gasket
manufacture ($300) and fabricated extractors $600 - $1000?). This is on top
of the purchase price for the head in the first place.

Any wonder you see the heads and inlet manifold only on Nissan Sport sites
in the US for $3400 US. It costs money to do this stuff properly and you get
what you pay for! An FIA is a bit like owning a works 510 SSS safari car vs
the 510 deluxe granny car. Both are great in their own right, but one is a
lot more fun and appreciates greatly in value.

Other heads may be better (OS GIKEN or LZ16 valvers) but this head was
available and they arent :-) A mint L18 OS GIKEN head went back to Japan a
while back. It sold for Y 1,000,000 $14,450 AUD) with all manifolds, carbs
and cams.

Cheers,
Feral Errol
