Hi Mark, I once installed a stereo in an N12 pulsar for a friend. I found an earth on the original stereo plug, but it turns out it isn't until you turn the lights out at which point the dash lights and also the tail lights all went out (just what you need at night)!! A new earth fixed this :) It's not the same car so it could be different, but it is worth a check I think. I didn't have a wiring diagram for the N12 so just poked around with the test light.
