Title: RE: help! - stereo install

Thats a good point. Possibly the wire you used was the one for the illumination of the standard radios when the dash lights are on. Try a new earth as Zac said.

Bit of a bummer getting the same wire twice with two different cars though.

I once installed a radio into my Morris (which was positive earth). As I had a negative earth radio, it took quite a bit of buggering around cause it had to be insulated from everything. Especially as the dash was made of metal. Run both pos and neg wires back to the battery, used some plastic bolts and insuating strips. All was fine until fiddling behind the dash knocked the one thing I hadn't insulated, (the aerial plug) into the heater and started a small fire. Problem was I was just about to take it for a roadworthy!!!!! I managed to rip out the crispy wires before I took it down and it passed OK in the end. Lucky the radio working was a RWC item.

Hi Mark, I once installed a stereo in an N12 pulsar for a friend. I found an
earth on the original stereo plug, but it turns out it isn't until you turn
the lights out at which point the dash lights and also the tail lights all
went out (just what you need at night)!!
A new earth fixed this :) It's not the same car so it could be different,
but it is worth a check I think. I didn't have a wiring diagram for the N12
so just poked around with the test light.
