Guess there would be a degree of annoyance, nice clean engine though, money spend on outside but not inside?

It's pretty much got to be either an injector or the pump right? Can
the pumps wear/fail in a way that affects only one cylinder?

Unless the cam had a lobe come off or something, but I've never heard of
that happening.

What else could cause a miss on a diesel?

Might just need a diesel-purge treatment and then an italian tune up
drive home.

Somebody in the Greater Washington section of the MBCA should have a
connection up there. If you can't find an MB DIesel enthusiast up
there, you sure ly can find a good MB Diesel mechanic who could be
paid to drive over and look at it, or have the PO drive it to the
shop and leave it there for you.

A phone call to the PO may yield some info. Does it miss all the
time? Does it get better as the engine warms? Does it smooth out as
the RPM goes up?

If either of the latter 2 questions are YES, then you have a better
chance of driving it home without problem. As an alternative to
paying someone to look for it, you could get a rebuilt injector
assembly from Q and take it with you. Pay the PO, drive it a out of
sight, and crack lines to see which cylinder is the culprit, then
install the rebuilt injector, and see if it is ok after that.
