when I changed my transmission over to Mobil synthetic ATF it came out dirty the first several times - lots of black stuff in the fluid. Not chunks, but just not clear. I guess it came from the bands. Similar with the differential. On two diesel trucks I owned, changing to synthetic caused one to develop a rear main leak while the other was fine. I would say YMMV.
