I don't know anything about a 606, but from your description it sounds like an 
old conventional gas engine as far as the ignition is concerned.

Question: Did you take apart the distributor and clean the spark advance?
Even if it's electronically operated, it could have become corroded and cause 
timing problems.
Would that cause your problem? It caused me the same problem several times 
before I got into diesels.
Solution: If it's like the old distributors, take it apart, remove any rust or 
corrosion with very fine sandpaper, grease it, and it should be good for a long 
while.
