No, but you CAN shop ahead of time. Contingency plans...

I did shop in FL without a contingency plan when I had to call for ambulance. While I was waiting, I did some shopping, then told the ambulance crew where to take me.

When you're having chest pains you don't stop and shop you go to the hospital NOW and get it taken care of. Can't compare it to any other business really.

THAT is exactly why we need deregulation. (NOT "Replace") Medical
regulation did NOT add to life expectancy. If anything, it detracts
from extending life expectancy. It doubles the personnel needed, (or
more) adds only costs. Had she been able to shop, and had the hosp and
docs not been carrying the overburden of regulations, she probably could
have gotten the same thing for $2000 or maybe only $1000. $1000 is
still a LOT of money for being checked out, but it is WAY better than
$20,000 for the same thing.

BUT . . . in 1940 the average life expectancy was about 60 years.
We have come a long way since then.
Modern medicine can be a good thing.
It should not be just for the wealthy and you should not have to sell your house to pay your medical bill if you need some significant medical treatment.

For example, a friend is a snowbird who spends the winters in AZ. He and his wife drove down around the end of October a few years ago and arrived on a Thursday. On Friday, he experienced some chest pains. His wife is a retired nurse and he has had heart issues in the past. She took no chances and insisted he go to the hospital to be checked out. They kept him from Friday afternoon until Saturday afternoon and despite their best efforts could find nothing wrong with him. The bill was over $20K. That is SILLY.

Your premise is socialist. Repeal bummercare. Give the inscos and the poor fools who had to pay for bummercare a period of time (a year?) to allow the current policies to run out. Let the market determine who buys ins and what ins is offered. Allow the policyholder to shop for docs, hosp and drugs. Before WWII, we had good docs, good hosp, a few drugs, and no med ins. We all got along just fine.

I do NOT what the Goobers to "replace" bummercare. I want the Goobers OUT of my doc's office.

RE: the Obamacare repeal I feel somewhat vindicated now that the Republicans clearly don't have a plan to replace it. They're foaming at the mouth to "repeal and eventually replace" but to just repeal the thing? Thats a really dumb idea. It'll take them a YEAR or TWO to come up with a plan. What are people (and insurance companies and hospitals/doctors/etc) supposed to do in that time? Or are they figuring they're so great nobody will get sick for a couple years while they get it figured out? I've spent 4 years watching the Republican attempts at repeal saying "Show me your plan". No plan has ever been forthcoming. I'm standing with Rand Paul on this one...

While watching the inauguration, a friend who pays little attention to national politics asked "Who's that, Nancy Peloski?" and then couldn't understand why I guffawed so hard. That's my new nickname for her, "Comrade Peloski".

What will be especially relishing is watching "Chuck-U" Schumer foam at the mouth, powerless to stop the R-majority Senate after Dirty Harry Reid changed the rules to allow a simple majority to override the minority (used to be that 60 votes were required, now just 51 can get the job done). Many warned that was a bad idea, now the dems will get a full taste of just how bad that was. First up: obliterate Obama-care! But for that one change, Obama-care might have lived on...
