I hate to show my ignorance but I am unfamiliar with "SFW version of gcc that comes 
with Solaris 2.8".

Could you clue me in?

By the way, it is correct that I am using gcc 2.95.3 from the sunfreeware binary 
distribution.  It's been a pain for several
applications. (OpenSSH, etc).
