Many thanks to everyone who has helped with this problem. It is now solved!
I have no idea what really went wrong, but I eventually solved it by reinstalling Mandrake and reloading all my settings etc. - I didn't do the original installation myself, so it was a bit hair-raising at times when I had to work out which options to select.
Although it has been frustrating, in many ways this has been a useful experience as I now know far more about how Mandrake and Linux actually work than I would have done if everything had been OK from the start!
