Margot, are you absolutely sure you have all the update rpms installed for the 
update-menu fix?  What's happening is exactly my symptoms before I (manually) 
installed the fix.  There are 6 of them:

                        popt-1.8-22.1.92mdk.i586.rpm

                         rpm-4.2-22.1.92mdk.i586.rpm
