Xconfigurator should work o.k., Iv'e always had hassles with fontpath &
default resolutions with xf86config & Mandrake(which BTW is the right way to
spell it, XF86Config is the name of the file it makes) . Try to find out
what your card is. In Win98 right click a clear area of your desktop then
Lclick
proprertys --> settings --> advanced -->adapter & you should see it....

Also, do you Know what version of xfree86 you have?
MDK 6.1 has the newest version, but 6.0 has an older one which may not work
as well for your card. www.xfree86.org
is a good place to look if you have problems with X.
