I wondered if you caught my post about checking what /etc/X11/X is linked to? I believe if you have installed version 4, all you need to do is redo the soft link to /etc/X11/X.
If you do ls -l /etc/X11/X, it should be currently soft linked to a version three server, but if you just change the link to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86, i.e. cd /etc/X11 rm X ln /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 X you will find startx will now work with version 4.
