[24] Sunderland Match Summary
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, October 13, 2001 by redend:
So Fergie made seven changes to the United side that started in Athens on Wednesday.
Fabien Barthez, David Beckham, Juan Sebatian Veron, Ronny Johnsen and Denis Irwin were
lrested, Roy Keane was suspended, and Ruud van Nistelrooy was on the bench.

They were replaced by Roy Carroll, Mikael Silvestre, Wesley Brown, Nicky Butt, Luke
Chadwick, Andy Cole and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The first goal came 10 minutes before half time when a classy move saw Chadwick knock
in a cross which was thumped past his own keeper by Varga. He was under pressure from
Scholes but it was definitely an o.g.

Carroll played well in nets - making good saves - especially a 30 yard swerving strike
from Phillips.

United's second came when Giggs played the ball to Coley and then raced almost fifty
yards to collect the return pass and slot past Sorensen in the Sunderland goal.

Giggs was rewarded for his goal by being pulled off (.... wait for it ... we only used
to get a half-time orange).

The match was sealed when Chadwick passed to Cole who buried it past Sorensen - having
just had one come back off the post.

Sunderland grabbed a consolation near the end when Kevin Phillips went around Carroll
and fired into the unguarded net - this bringing the score to 1 - 3 and irritatingly
fulfilling RedHotTip's correct score prediction on Friday. There was just time for
Yorkie to head against the underside of the bar. All in all another impressive away
performance - the chant "... so f*cking easy.." could be heard amongst the reduced
away allocation.

I suspect if the result had been different we'd have had the usual bout of sniping at
Fergie's selection/tactics that seems to accompany any set back. Some people will
never learn - the boss is the man with the plan. He knows better than anyone else what
combinations work best in training and how individual players are playing at any time
- when they need a rest and when they need a kick up the arse to optimise performance.

If United reserves get past Arsenal reserves in the League Cup we've been drawn
against Grimsby at home.

It'll be the first time we'll be able to take advanttage of the reduced prices for
these matches - unless Grimsby refuse to play ball.

[20] What are the chances of that?

Posted Saturday, October 13, 2001 by redend:
Well, RedHotTip manages to do it again - although he didn't win on his main 2
selections he did still predict the correct score (Friday story [2] United to win by
what? ) which gave odds of 12/1. Maybe he's not the clueless f*ckwit we had all
suspected?

And on top of that he even complained that the first goal was a Sunderland o.g. and
therefore he also made a bizarre claim of moral victory on his main selections of
Sunderland to score first & half-time : full-time of Sunderland : Manchester United.

The only response to this was to give RHT a thorough shoeing.

But - he is still beating the (

[18] Will Fergie pull out of FA Cup?
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, October 13, 2001 by redend:
Err - no ....but ....

Fergie may have an intriguing possible fixture clash next year. His horse Rock of
Gibraltar, (Group One winner at Longchamp last Saturday - but you knew that didn't
you) will be entered for the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, which clashes with the FA Cup
Final on May 4.

Lets face it - Fergie should never have entered his horse (tell that to the judge).

[17] Giggs meeting ....
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, October 13, 2001 by redend:
....yet further clarification

As reported earlier the meeting is now in the TRAFFORD suite on Oct 24th. However the
start time is 7 pm. The 8pm mentioned previously is when Giggsy is due to make his
entrance. So a solid hour to fuel up at the bar first to help us think up intelligent
and probing questions to ask him.
