That was my first question to the surgeon, 'what was the worst case?' And he said it was three to four months and he said he would have to see. I'm going for the first game, but I am not going to take any risks because if it went again I would probably be out for six to seven months. The response I've had from the fans, Man Utd, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, West Ham - everybody has been amazing." --------------------------------- [28] FA on Becks training --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: "The important thing with David's exercise was to keep his injured foot off the ground. It meant David was able to do a bit of jumping along with the running he's doing.'' --------------------------------- [27] Choccy on critics --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: "Because of the standards the club has set in recent years, it is always disappointing if you don't win any silverware. The manager wants to achieve something year in year out. But seasons like this one, when you don't win anything, only strengthens the squad. Despite the number of medals the players have won, they always want to win more. That's what the manager demands of them. Sometimes when you draw a blank, it builds your resolve and makes you more determined to prove the critics wrong. I'm sure the players will be desperate to get back into pre-season training to do that." --------------------------------- [26] Keano on Duff --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: "A player I rate highly" --------------------------------- [25] Balls to you --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: Brazil's Edilson on new Adidas World Cup footballs "It's big and it's too light" --------------------------------- [24] Blomqvist released by Everton --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: David Moyes "It was a very difficult decision because I felt Jesper Blomqvist had a made a contribution since my arrival. But I have Idan Tal, Mark Pembridge, David Unsworth and Kevin McLeod who are all comfortable on that side that of the field. Everyone at Everton Football Club wishes Jesper Blomqvist all the very best for the future." --------------------------------- [23] Houllier can't spend like we can --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: "United spent a lot of money last summer. My riches are my team, if you look at the team that played our European games, half were under 24. Some of them are going to the World Cup. When you don't have a certain amount of money to spend you have to be clever. I don't think that people knew how good Stephane Henchoz would be. I don't think people knew how good John Arne Riise would be when he came here. To be clever is to be on the ball all the time. When we signed Nicolas Anelka I think it was a good signing." --------------------------------- [22] The FA on Butt and Beckham --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: "They are progressing well. There have been no setbacks. The healing process is continuing for both of them on schedule." --------------------------------- [21] Beckham fitness exercise --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: Paul Newman, the FA's director of communications "Alan Smith worked with David in an exercise on a mini-trampoline, a `trampet' which is two-foot wide. David stood on the `trampet' and balanced on his left foot [the injured one] and used his right to kick the ball back to Alan when he threw it at him. The important thing about the exercise is that it keeps his injured foot off the ground. This meant that David was able to do a lot of jumping along with the running he is doing. He trained for more than half-an-hour before going back to the hotel for a massage." --------------------------------- [20] More Keano on last World Cup --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: "This is going to be my last World Cup because I'll be 34 or 35 when the next one comes around. So I need to make the most of it." --------------------------------- [19] Saint Michael reckons England have a chance --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: Here we go again, massive optimism, misplaced, then when the lights go out everyone gets the blame, most notably any United players within eyeshot. "We're one of about eight teams that have a very good chance of winning it. Obviously France and Argentina probably stand out ahead of us but if we played them in a one-off game then we wouldn't be scared. Whatever happens in this World Cup though - and we'll be trying to win it - everyone should realise we have a very young side. France started where we are now and look what they've gone and done. I certainly think we have the potential to do that as well" --------------------------------- [18] Keano quot --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: "England have a good team and a good coach in Steve McClaren" --------------------------------- [17] Now that must hurt --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: as much mentally as physically Spain's goalkeeper Santiago Canizares is out of the World Cup after dropping a bottle of scented water on his foot and rupturing a tendon. --------------------------------- [16] Fergie support --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: this from Elie Baup, Bordeaux manager and very close friend of Fab "With Fabien, we speak a lot of Alex Ferguson. Technicaly, we all say the same thing. The relations with the players make the real difference. The players are of a nervous nature. You have to know them, to reassure them all them so they can be good. They musn't know the restraint or the doubt. The English have this habit of helping the player. And Ferguson, there is no-one nicer than him. He will never have a double speech. He is hard but he protects his players. There is a feeling of trust between him and the players." Fab recently said that Fergie was the best manager he had worked with. --------------------------------- [15] Excuses, excuses? --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry on why their new ground will hold 55,000 instead of 75,000 originally proposed. "We won't ever lose the focus that the team comes first at Liverpool. We always want to ensure the revenue is available for the manager to strengthen his squad. We don't want to have a huge financial millstone hanging around our necks. Our view is that a 55,000-seat stadium is right for our needs. It will cost us between £60million and £70m to build." And that, my friends, is a lot of hub caps --------------------------------- [14] Becks to be fit for Sweden game --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: FA spokesman Paul Newman "We are working in close liaison with doctors at Manchester United and he will definitely catch our first match against Sweden." --------------------------------- [13] David James drops move hint? --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: "A lot of people have said I could, should and will do something big in this game. My aim now is to prove them right rather than prove my critics wrong. It's easy to let things go when you're in a decent side and that's probably what happened to me at Liverpool. I needed to show more self-control and that's what I've done, I'm not talking about technical stuff like dealing with crosses. Just looking after myself. I've been more professional in my approach to everything over the last two years. I've worked hard to sort myself out and I'm happy with the product. I want to get as much as I can out of the game, be England's No1 and win things." --------------------------------- [12] Keano on Irish elections --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: "I'm not going to comment on politics. I have far more important things to be doing." --------------------------------- [11] More Keane on Quinn miss --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: "There have been comments about me not being there but I am not bothered by that. The Press will always make a big thing out of something like that." --------------------------------- [10] Keane on the World Cup --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: "Fingers crossed, we will get a bit of sun out there which would be very welcome. Then we can look forward to what I hope will definitely be more than three games at the World Cup - because our aim is to get out of the group. To be honest, it is a bit of a schoolboy dream just to be going to a World Cup. I was fortunate enough to be involved in 1994 but, realistically, this will probably be my last time at the World Cup - and I certainly want to make the most of it. But it is also the first chance for many of the players and it is a great opportunity for them to perform on the world stage. We are going out there to enjoy ourselves, but we also aim to do well too. We know it is important to get a positive result in the first game. If you can get that then it sets you up nicely." --------------------------------- [9] Next season --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: fixtures are released on June 13th, first match of the season is August 17th/18th --------------------------------- [8] Keano on missing Quinn testimonial --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: "Some of the criticism has been unfair and I want to put my side of the story. I needed treatment and I explained that to everybody involved. Mick McCarthy knew about it, Niall Quinn was aware of the situation and it was always the plan that I would meet up with the squad on Wednesday in Dublin." --------------------------------- [7] Quotes from the past --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: Gabriel Batistuta "There is only one club I would lave Fiorentina for. Not Juve, Inter or AC. The only club I would join is Manchester United" He joined Roma. --------------------------------- [6] Blanc still to decide --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: A journalist we know spoke to those in the know at the club yesterday who hinted that Blanc still has to decide on whether he will stay or not - they expect to know next week. --------------------------------- [5] Keano on Nigeria defeat --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: "You don't want to look too much into friendly games. I know we conceded two bad goals, and I should have done better for the second, but there's not the same intensity as in a proper international. There's also going to be an element that no player wants to get injured, so while it was disappointing to lose, you have to be realistic because you're not going to win every match. I still felt the players gave a good account of themselves and everything looks good for the World Cup, although being there is not enough. We need to qualify and take it from there. It's going to be a difficult group and the first match is going to be very important." --------------------------------- [4] Paul Rachubka joins Charlton --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: Charlton have signed Paul Rachubka for £200,000. Alan Curbishley "Paul impressed us in the reserve games he played for us at the back end of the season. We are delighted he has decided to join us, we have been looking for a young goalkeeper to bring into the club and add competition for places and Paul fits the bill perfectly." --------------------------------- [3] We're all managers now --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: Warwick Business School have started running a course on Football Management, leading to a fully recognised management qualification - a Certificate in Applied Management. You could put it on your CV and not tell anyone what you specialised in. They've got 17 football managers and coaches on their first course, including Mark Hughes and Brian McClair. I suddenly feel the need to get a management qualification. Portia Vale --------------------------------- [2] Riot charge for Millwall play off --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: >From Ananova 'Suspects believed to have been involved in football violence following the recent Division One play-off match between Birmingham City and Millwall could face up to 10 years in jail. They will face the rarely used and more serious charge of riot rather than the more common one of violent disorder, the Metropolitan Police said. To prove a charge of riot against a suspect prosecutors will have to show that 12 or more people together threatened unlawful violence. Two men who appeared at Greenwich magistrates court today have already had the charges against them changed from violent disorder to riot. The May 2 game was won by Birmingham with a last-minute goal at Millwall's New Den ground in south east London. Nearly 100 police officers and a number of horses were injured in rioting by Millwall fans after the game. Detective Chief Inspector Peter Newman, who is leading the investigation into events after the game, said: "I showed our footage from the streets around the Den following the game to counsel and Crown Prosecution Service lawyers. "They were shocked at the level of extreme violence used against officers and they felt that the most appropriate charge was riot which, though unusual, is wholly appropriate in this case. "Although it is a more complex offence to prove than the lesser offence of violent disorder the Met, CPS and counsel are satisfied there is sufficient evidence." --------------------------------- [1] Red News offer --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, May 18, 2002 by bar-knee: We have produced nine issues of Red News this season and currently have limited stock of 8 available. Beckham has been put through a 30-minute session on a mini trampoline as he continues his recovery programme after breaking the second metatarsal bone in his left foot. The England skipper bounced repeatedly on his left foot to cushion the injury, allowing him to kick balls with his right foot to get himself back into shape. Sven-Goran Eriksson is said to be pleased by the progress made by both Beckham and Nicky Butt, while Sol Campbell, who is resting a gashed shin, was the only other player not to take part in the squad's final training session in Dubai. The squad are preparing to leave their luxury hotel to fly to South Korea, where they will be based for a week and play a warm-up game against the joint World Cup hosts.' --------------------------------- [36] IMUSA London meeting --------------------------------- Posted Friday, May 17, 2002 by bar-knee: The final London meeting of the season will take place on Tuesday May 21st at 8pm at the usual venue, the Princess Louise pub near Holborn tube station (come out of the station, cross the road and keep going straight so Sainsbury's is on your left - the pub is 100 yards up on the left and we are upstairs) . Although the season has finished disappointingly, we would like you all to come along - this has been an experimental time for IMUSA London and we would like some feedback from all of you. In addition, the London committee will be reorganised to mirror the new structure expected to be adopted by IMUSA at the AGM. That means we will need a representative for each of 7 areas, the precise details of which will be provided at the meeting. If you are interested in being one of these representatives then please come to the meeting ready to have a brief chat and we will have some sort of vote at the end of the meeting. Also, we are going to be making a concerted effort to line up some guests for next season's meetings - we are in touch with Norman Whiteside, but if you have any other suggestions/contacts/ideas, please come along and let us know. Cheers, Chris Gottlieb Paul Capper Paul Hope Craig Stevens --------------------------------- [35] Keane ready for Ireland --------------------------------- Posted Friday, May 17, 2002 by bar-knee: "What has happened this season with Manchester United is history and now I can put it to the back of my mind. "I said when I was with United that I would not be thinking about the World Cup, so now I'm with the Irish I can concentrate on them and forget all about United". --------------------------------- [34] Keano on his recent knock --------------------------------- Posted Friday, May 17, 2002 by bar-knee: "Obviously it was an Arsenal player who caught me so there might be some history! But football is a physical sport and you are going to get a few knocks, but I feel fine. I'm hanging in there. I needed to get one or two injuries sorted out earlier this week, but now I'm in great form and I'm ready and raring to go. It's going to be a long day with all the travelling, but once we get there with a bit of sun on our backs, then we can start to look forward to it". --------------------------------- [33] World Cup banning orders --------------------------------- Posted Friday, May 17, 2002 by bar-knee: PA story 'A total of 1,007 alleged hard-core England football hooligans have been banned from the World Cup. Police says it is a ten-fold increase on the number who were barred from Euro 2000. Those banned from travelling to Japan and Korea include 112 Cardiff City fans, 98 from Stoke City, 66 from Leeds United and 23 from Millwall.' --------------------------------- [32] Re: Simon Davies story --------------------------------- Posted Friday, May 17, 2002 by bar-knee: Hi, Re the Simon Davies story, I think I'm right in saying that it's the same Simon Davies that we were interested in signing from Peterborough two or three seasons ago. He was offered to us in a pair with Matthew Etherington for about £1.5 million - signing him now for ten times as much money would amount to Fergie admitting to making a mistake in not signing him then, not to mention looking pretty silly for having to shell out so much more cash. Can't see it somehow! Regards, Ian --------------------------------- [31] Dippers on the move. --------------------------------- Posted Friday, May 17, 2002 by Howsey: >From Ananova: "Liverpool plan to leave Anfield and build a new ground on nearby Stanley Park. A 55,000-capacity stadium is planned which will cost between £60-£70millon and will be ready for the start of the 2005-06 season. Original plans for a 70,000-seater stadium were shelved because the cost would hit £120million." Nothing to do with the fact that they wouldn't fill it then? --------------------------------- [30] Bet Bet Bet. --------------------------------- Posted Friday, May 17, 2002 by Howsey: Our partner Sporting Odds has odds on the leading scorer in the WC, click the link at the bottom of the page to bet: Hernan Crespo 8/1 David Trezeguet 10/1 Gabriel Batistuta 10/1 Raul 10/1 Thierry Henry 10/1 Christian Vieri 12/1 Ronaldo 12/1 Fernando Morientes 14/1 Michael Owen 14/1 Rivaldo 14/1 Giovane Elber 16/1 Vicenzo Montella 16/1 Claudio Lopez 18/1 Filippo Inzaghi 18/1 Pauletta 18/1 Alessandro Del Piero 25/1 Francesco Totti 25/1 Javier Saviola 25/1 Nuno Gomez 25/1 Ronaldinho 25/1 http://www.sportingodds.co.uk/adserver/scripts/ict.dll?click?rnews1 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news http://www.sportingodds.co.uk/adserver/scripts/ict.dll?click?rnews3 CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE ODDS OR TO REGISTER/PLACE A BET ---------------------------------------------------------- This email has been filtered for swear words which cause some email systems to block messages. ----------------------------------------------------------
