You actually need to burn more fuel than you get out in electricity, due to
efficiency concerns. Engine's <50% efficient at turning heat into motion,
belts/chains/gears are only ~90-95% efficient, alternator is only ~75-80%
peak efficiency...

end result being .35 (average spark ignited thermo efficiency) * .95 * .80 =
.266

So you get ~0.266 joules of electrical energy out of each joule of fuel
consumed. This is of course above and beyond the energy required to maintain
your present speed, balanced against the force of aerodynamic drag, the
rolling resistance of the tires, the friction of the transmission and rear
drive, and the friction of the axles.

The .266 figure above only covers between the piston and the alternator
output, mind; input inefficiences (intake restrictions, venturi,
carburetors, throttling losses) and additional output inefficiencies
(generation efficiency, storage, metering, monitoring) are not accounted
for.
