I see this turning into an oil thread as soon as Stanley reads it. I have seen hydrogen generators operating on low current (car battery). Obviously you cannot convert energy with out loss, but a slow trickle conversion off of solar panels is quite possible and if augmented with grid power, it would be damn near free. The problem with hydrogen generators is the size required to produce an amount of gas sufficient to run an engine. They can be used to augment one though.
