Interesting discussion.

I think because I've been riding/driving so long, I don't even
consciously think about shifting.  When to shift is such a sensory,
second-nature, seat-of-the-pants experience, I just do it without
giving it a second thought because I sense that's the machine's
comfort zone (aka "sweet spot").

Don't even need a tach.  I let the engine tell me what it wants to do
in a given situation.  And that works with any vehicle...even big
rigs, which I've spent half my life driving.

In fact, I don't much enjoy driving any vehicle that has an automatic
transmission, because it removes the essential man/machine
synchronicity from the equation which makes riding/driving so
enjoyable.
