I think the answer really depends on how much you want to do.

Out of the box, there are bunch of tools (from Nagios -> Solarwinds -> BMC 
Patrol) that will do the basic stuff. If you are a heavy Microsoft shop, then I 
don't think you can go part SCOM. If you are a mixed shop, then one of the 
other tools is probably a better fit (in an enterprise scenario).

Once you get it setup it's pretty easy to configure - it's just a matter of 
copy/pasting the little text based config definitions around.

And very complicated, from what I was able to gather. :-) I also looked into 
the free version of GroundWorks (which uses Nagios, I believe), and there was 
an awful lot of configuring that needed to be done, to get even simple 
information.
