(BTW, is there any evidence that the rpg related books actually bring
people into gaming? I know a number of people who read Dragonlance
books and never gamed nor had an interest to do so.)

I started reading Dragonlance, but it was my current group that actually
brought me into the game. I didn't actually realize until after being
introduced to D&D (and the tales of the lance boxed set) that you could
actually play in the Dragonlance setting...

What the rpg related books need is advertisements within the book itself
(at the start or end) that provide details that there is an actual game
that you can play.
