Well, I guess it all boils down to weather or not the group is having fun.
I can see a group of tenth level characters tracking a wolf down as fun,
provided that everyone is roleplaying thier characters.. (I mean, a Ranger
would do something like that ICly, right? And the paladan would be itching
to protect the town, I'd bet...:) )

However, I would say, from experience, that meeting something that would
slaughter the party is no fun. (We wound up fighting a Uberbaddy with a
higher CR than an acient red wyrm, he slaughtered six fifteenth level
characters, it wasn't pretty... !@#$! vorpral sword)

I guess what I'm rambling about is that it depends on the group.. a "Kick
the door down" style of gamer (To use the DMG's term for "Hack and slash")
Wouldn't have fun tracking down something that wouldn't even give them exp.
However, for a roleplayer it might be a chance to roleplay in a safe
environment.

Just my two cents.
