I had the same problem -- cdrecord reported that the drive was returning a servo motor failure error.. I replaced the drive and the problem is gone. Your problem may be different but you'll find cdrecord will tell you why it failed whereas cdrw just sticks its tongue out at you after eating a perfectly good blank disc. ;)
