Another solution is to use a program like Abby Finereader which can convert your PDF (with graphics) to MS Word. The top end version of this program can also output to XML. Sorry, I didn't read this entire thread, but there are of course other options that are in many cases better at doing this then Adobe Acrobat. Try Scansoft PDFConverter or BCL Jade for example.
