You embed the fonts in the document, just like you do with a PDF. They aren't usable outside the document, but it views and prints correctly with the fonts you've chosen. It's in the general options on the tools menu from the save dialog. There's a check box which says "Embed Truetype fonts"

So what happens if I create a sales sheet in InDesign in Futura and Columbo fonts, and the client wants a copy in Word? Even if I could duplicate the original file in Word, which is doubtful, how is the client going to view the Word file without purchasing the Futura and Columbo fonts, and without me sending the fonts along with the Word file?

Now that's it's lunch time and it's raining outside, I decided to try an experiment. I took a document that was created in MS Word with Futura font, then created a PDF out of it, then ran the Abbyy program, and yes it thought the font was Arial in the text window in Abbyy. I selected what I wanted to be a different font, went to the font pull down menu and selected Futura and then sent it to MS Word, and the text in the document in MS Word was still Futura.
Now I agree it would have been nice if Abbyy had kept it as Futura, but at least this way I can still edit the text in MS Word. If I saved it as a jpg, I would waste more time trying to edit the text there.

Interesting alternative, but...
I tested the same ad with Abbyy and basically it just placed an image of the PDF in the Word doc. This could have been done for free by saving the PDF as a jpg.
If there wasn't text over the image, then the text retained its editability. The problem here is that the original text was in futura, and Abbyy converted it to Arial.
The concept that a professional designer can send a Word file conversion (from InDesign, PageMaker, Illustator, etc.) to a client for editing or other use, and have it look exactly like the original design, has more holes in it than Swiss cheese.
This is a dilemma for many designers, as I have had clients who don't understand why I can't just send them a Word file from my creations. It seems that they have been convinced by the Microsoft Gods that the final word in document creation is, in fact, Word. That said, many clients who are mired in arial/times new roman quicksand see no difference or value in font selection, and simply replace futura with arial.
Ah, the battle between designers and corporate document technicians lives on. Of course, this is often a contest between egos and money, with staff unhappy that designers charge $50 to $150 an hour, claiming that the precise and creative work of designers is an unnecessary expenditure of corporate pennies. After all, there really isn't any difference between futura and arial, is there?

Another solution is to use a program like Abby Finereader which can convert your PDF (with graphics) to MS Word. The top end version of this program can also output to XML.

Sorry, I didn't read this entire thread, but there are of course other options that are in many cases better at doing this then Adobe Acrobat. Try Scansoft
PDFConverter or BCL Jade for example.
Speaking of such options, has anyone tried and been happy with PDF-XML programs like CambrdigeDocs?
