This is what I believe. Manufactures like to have an experimental run that can be walked away from in case of problems before committing to new technology, and that's how I view the entire APS experiment - just proving the manufacturing technology for future purposes. Yes they are rumoured to have made billions on APS - profitable experiments are well received!
Full-frame sensors may come, but why bother? They're making bags of money with APS-sized sensors, and from a manufactures point of view, APS works for them, it's good enough.
