That doesn't sound very healthy, the SDM lenses aren't speed demons but the two 
I have do focus quite fast.

The 55/1.4 takes almost a second to travel from close focus to infinity.
This is about 3 times longer than what it takes for the FA50/1.4 to do the
same thing.
And while the motor is silent, the mechanism is far from silent.
