You can test for the difference between gray and 5% below clipped highlights. 
You'll find it's about two stops. But you can tell by looking at a jpeg derived 
histo as well. If the highlights are clipped just a wee bit, you're golden.

i use the histogram like that all the time and it works well when the brightest highlight is my reference; but when spot metering it might not be the brightest highlight that i'd want to move to 5%, yet the histogram is based on the whole scene; if the histogram had a marker for where the spot-metered value lay, that would be a great aid
