I think that you should be able to port a design forward within a product line effortlessly, errorlessly, and losslessly. I also think that process should go backward effortlessly, errorlessly, and losslessly provided you don't introduce any of the new features which are not backward compatible. For example, if I take a P99SE design and import it into DXP 2004, I SHOULD be able to take the resulting design (without any changes) and export it back into P99SE and arrive at a functionally exact equivalent file I originally started with.
