I have solved my problem in an embarrassing way: 'follow instructions!'....
In rebuilding my library over the last few days, I fell into the habit of rescanning, "Look for new and changed files" -- this procedure was sufficient for my task. When I installed Smart Mix and rescanned, I did the same thing. I didn't realize that this WAS NOT suitable to this task. Once I rescanned with "Clear Library and rescan everything" Smart Mix works perfectly. What threw me for a time was that after failure on my Win 8 computer, I tried Smart Mix on my next older server, a Win 7 computer. Smart Mix worked perfectly on this server version using only the default scan; I assumed that the 'problem' with Smart Mix had to lie with either Win 8 or 64 bit systems (Win 7 is 32 bit).
