I have solved my problem in an embarrassing way: 'follow instructions!'....
Don't feel bad :-).
In rebuilding my library over the last few days, I fell into the habit of rescanning, "Look for new and changed files" -- this procedure was sufficient for my task.
SmartMix should trigger a full wipe & rescan when it's installed for the first time. Don't know why this failed for you. Enjoy anyway! :-)
