Once upon a time, the world expected great things of my generation. In the
U.S., I was literally the first GenX politician. (The 18-year-old for U.S.
President, at the older edge of GenX -- in all earlier election cycles,
18-year-olds would have been Boomers. So flatly, literally, accurately, I
was the first GenXer in U.S. federal elections.)

My generation also had the Chinese college students who stood up in
Tiananmen Square. Some know that they and I linked up (I formed the China
Support Network for Americans to respond to that tragedy / outrage /
massacre), and that we still beat the drums in unison for change in China.

--Were these kids supposed to take over the world? Heck, I will now turn 40
this year, and my beating the drums has shown no visible effectiveness.
They, too, are pushing 40 but my sense of it is that the group doesn't have
its act together. For example, the Chinese Democratic Party exists in at
least three pieces, Balkanized factions that don't unite.

At the time of T-Square, there was a sense that a whole new world, reality,
or existence was possible. They came close to changing that government.
(Martial law conveniently cancelled a meeting of the National People's
Congress--where sympathizers might actually have passed some reforms.) So
close, no cigar. Shortly after the massacre as top dissidents arrived,
State-side, I thought that these leaders needed the same kind of
infrastructure that assists U.S. Senators.

Don't they need researchers, communications and scheduling aides/handlers,
fundraisers, lobbyists, and something akin to strategists or campaign
managers? --I looked at the dissidents, with the eyes of a 22-year-old
former politician. I know damn well what politicians need. The other reason
why I formed the CSN was because there was animated sentiment amongst
Americans--against the atrocity that was witnessed--and, I felt that it
should be organized into an effective response.

The "Tiananmen Generation" is not "another ruling elite" that Hank looks
for, but they raised some high hopes and expectations in the world, and
their generation is still likely to get a turn at the helm of politics. They
do have a community, infrastructure, and following, of sorts. I think
they're still ambitious, with bold dreams of a better world, but they still
lack the capacity to deliver.

More will be needed before they, or I, can take a call from Hank Roth, to
reverse American corruption. That's a mighty tall task.

Until then,
/s./ John P. Kusumi
