THE WEEKEND PRIMETIME NEWSLETTER
AMERICA'S NEWSCHANNEL MSNBC
Friday August 2nd- Sunday August 4th, 2002
Lions and tigers and bears... almost. This week it's sharks and dogs... one
animal with an instinct to protect itself... another trained to kill.
The bloody, brutal world of dog-fighting. It's alive and well all over this
country. And there are breeders who stop at nothing to produce the most vicious dogs
around. Wonder why so many people are getting attacked these days? Look no further
than the dog-fighting ring and the puppy mills that are thriving underground.
SATURDAY AT 8PM ET, check out "MSNBC INVESTIGATES: MEAN DOGS: BORN OR BRED?" In this
documentary you'll hear from the people who raise and fight killer canines. An early
warning... the pictures in this program are extremely graphic and are not suitable for
children.
Then on Sunday at 8PM ET we look at the deadly attacks of sharks with
"NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER'S: ATTACKS OF THE MYSTERY SHARK." Fabien Cousteau
(Jacques' grandson) takes us into the deep see to solve a deadly underwater mystery.

***WEEKEND MAGAZINE: VAN DAM PREMIERE
Months before Elizabeth Smart vanished in Utah, the country was caught up in the
tragic story of another missing young girl. Seven-year-old Danielle Van Dam
disappeared from her San Diego home last February. Nearly three weeks later, her
next-door neighbor was charged with her murder. Now, at his trial, some tough
questions are being asked... NOT of the defendant. These questions are aimed at
Danielle's parents.
Josh Mankiewicz reports.

MSNBC INVESTIGATES: LOCKUP: SHOCK INCARCERATION
I'm sure you're a perfectly law-abiding citizen, but let's just pretend you got sent
up the river for committing a crime. Would you trade in half of your say, four-year
sentence, in exchange for hard-time in a prison boot camp? That's right... it's just
like what you know of the military, and you get a two-year term in exchange. Sounds
like a deal to me. It's an option many young men and women are offered in some
states. In this program we get bossed around by some of the toughest prison guards on
duty... all in the hopes of setting us straight. It's no walk in the park-- a third of
the prisoners who take this option fail out and are sent to plain old cells for the
remainder of their sentences... all deals off.
Hosted by John Seigenthaler.
10PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: THE RUNAWAYS
The producer of this hour spent 3 weeks on the streets of Portland, Oregon documenting
the lives of a group of street kids, most who are heroin-addicted, one who was 7
months pregnant. The kids, for the most part, chose this life for themselves. They
are smart, they want to be in control, and they have found an incredible haven in this
community where drugs are easy to get and the authorities have chosen to accept them
rather than try to get rid of them.
Hosted by John Seigenthaler.
11PM ET
***MSNBC INVESTIGATES: MEAN DOGS: BORN OR BRED? PREMIERE
In this program you get the chance to really get a ring-side view of the vicious and
disgusting exhibition of dog-fighting. No surprise it's a million dollar business...
both the breeding and the betting. Though it's outlawed in every state, the
underground world still thrives. The result is more and more of the rest of us are
becoming victims of attacks. Again, a warning that this program contains brutal video
and is not appropriate for children.
Hosted by John Seigenthaler.

LOCKUP: SHOCK INCARCERATION
SUNDAY AUGUST 4
6-8PM
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER: SHARKS!
Great white, deep trouble. Author Peter Benchley teams up with National Geographic
premiere marine photographer David Doubilet to explore the hidden life of great white
sharks 25 years after his best-selling novel Jaws made an
entire generation afraid to go into the ocean.
8-10PM ET
***NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER: ATTACKS OF THE MYSTERY SHARK PREMIERE
It's another underwater adventure with Cousteau. This time it's Fabien (Jacques'
grandson) who investigates a mysterious man-eater -- the possible culprit behind some
of the first recorded shark attacks in North America.
10PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: UNDERWATER KILLERS
The experts always tell us we don't really have to worry about sharks... there are
only a few species that are dangerous to man, they're more afraid of us than we are of
them... you know. So here's something else to worry about. Crocodiles. And hippos.
Those are just some of the non-sharks who've had run-ins with the people featured on
this program.
