You have had several replies all hopefully adding to your enlightenment, I have certainly used JPEGs in fact at one time it was almost the only way to get pictures into PowerPoint.
I have also found that for some subjects the PNG format has given smaller and punchier files for PowerPoint.
Another point; you say you do not have ImageReady - have you removed it? It is partnered with Photoshop. Try the Goto item at the base of the toolbox.
Save for Web is your best bet for judging the quality you can achieve against the smallness of the file, as well as offering you several choices of file format and image size. Remember that speed counts in a PowerPoint presentation.
