Hi David Thanks for your reassuring response. I hadn't actually been anywhere near a floppy disk for weeks, so maybe it's not quite the same problem as you had before, but I hope it is equally as insignificant.
I tried as you suggested anyway.. insert a disk into the a drive, open up a file and the close completely, restart computer. And now I shall hope for the best.
