Simon My feeling is it's still not 'moderated' enough. <g> There is just far too much noise that has nothing to do with digital imaging or professionalism. IAC, the 'soul' of a list doesn't come from idle chatter but from the generosity of the knowledge imparted, the quality of the posts and the manner in which the knowledge is imparted, i.e., with humour and not condescension. > If 'low level, non-pro' posters don't get replies to their postings > they will soon leave the list. Can't be done; I've tried it! Even if it could be done, people keep changing the subject lines! Also, what do you do if you subscribe to the digest version? > Personally I would rather have to many postings with some variety, > passion and life to them rather than what we have now, where every > other posting is ruled out of order, not trimmed properly etc. Well, trimming doesn't take that much skill. Deleting email addresses is the one I object to. If you have set up your client to NOT quote addresses but it still does, then it's up to the poster to make sure they have NOT included their email address for their name or left the name field blank when they set up the account. The onus should be on the original poster and not the replier. Why should you be lampooned for other people's lack of knowledge, carelessness or reluctance to change ISP or email client? If they can't be bothered whether their email address is harvested, why should I be held to account? > I suggest the mods trust the list members somewhat more! :-) Recipe for disaster. A lot of pros, who join for a p2p discussion, will leave the list. Trust me, I was a listmum of list for a number of years and know this from experience of watching pros unsub. The answer is to have a minimum of three lists: pro, chat and 101. Give people the choice to sub to all three and get the chat and basic questions or just the pro knowledge. That's how we solved the problem. It costs money to run a list with decent software and from a fast server. Some of the overposting is caused by posts not appearing fast enough while some is just guilt based, I reckon: usually triggered by the copyright symbol. <g> If anyone really wants to change the list, they should think about contacting Ed off list and offering a regular donation and see if he's game to invest in Lyris software, a fast server and a pint for the listmums to calm their nerves when they go off duty.
