I can't see how there is so much 'noise' when there are hardly any posts at all ! :-)

IAC, the 'soul' of a list doesn't come from idle chatter but from the generosity of the knowledge imparted, the quality of the posts and the manner in which the knowledge is imparted, i.e., with humour and not condescension.

Agreed

I have said before that it's so simple
to add a tag to the subject line so people can set up filters for their
email clients and simply bin some postings automatically.

Can't be done; I've tried it!

I filter by the [prodig] tag on all messages...

Even if it could be done, people keep changing
the subject lines!

We've been here haven't we...? :-) I can't see why we can't have a system of set 'tags': OT Assistants, OT Repairs, OT Flamebait, OT whateverelse. List moms can publish them every month as a reminder. Then people could surely set up filters accordingly. No? A bit like a colour profile tag attached to each message. (Trying to keep things on topic... ;-)

Changing the subject line is unhelpful but if the 'tag' remained it wouldn't matter.

Also, what do you do if you subscribe to the digest
version?

No idea :-)

I suggest the mods trust the list members somewhat more! :-)

Recipe for disaster. A lot of pros, who join for a p2p discussion, will
leave the list. Trust me, I was a listmum of list for a number of years and
know this from experience of watching pros unsub.

They left already! :-) It's just you and me now! ;-)) <vbg>

The answer is to have a minimum of three lists: pro, chat and 101. Give
people the choice to sub to all three and get the chat and basic questions
or just the pro knowledge. That's how we solved the problem.

Sure. I think my 'tags' would accomplish the same thing in fact.
