Hi Philip

You do not say where in darkest Africa this kit is bound for. I am no more
'au fait' with that price range of kit than you are, but do make sure it is
capable of having a mains lead with the right plug for power! Also that it
can be switched from 220v to 120v. Different countries have different power
voltages. Some vary through the day from 0 - 250v!

It may seem silly, but that is actually more important than what make or
type. There are so many variations in Africa that a simple issue like the
wrong power lead can bring the whole benefit to a grinding halt. If it is
wrong, getting the correct one out there, could prove well nigh impossible!

It would help if you could also provide some sort of surge control at the
plug/socket connection end. Darkest Africa suggests that the area could well
be frequented by tropical rainstorms with lightning displays of a power that
are rarely seen further north in Europe or Northern America. I admit it
wouldn't help in a direct hit, but the variations due to electrical
interference is considerable. An average power supply is about 185v, but
will vary from 110v - 250V.

Sometimes I have found it impossible to recharge batteries on lighting kits
set to 240v because the power is so low, yet I could not change the charger
to 110v because the increase in power to 185v would damage it. Well supplied
enclaves such as mines and their living quarters, rely on multiples of huge
Cummins diesels to kick in when there is an outage.

Elsewhere in the bush you take your chance. That's why in film processing
days, E6 solutions in some less fortunate areas varied in temperature
between 15 - 25 degreesC! Anywhere between 25 magenta and 25 cyan!

Norman
