There was a big build-up to the game and for it to go like that it was unbelievable. It's a night that I won't forget for a long while. To start so well and carve up the chances and score the goals we did was a great feeling." --------------------------------- [25] Fergie on Bayern-Milan --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: "I'll be watching the match. Our scouts are going out to Germany on Wednesday morning so we'll get a report from them. I wouldn't like to say who will win - the tie is very evenly balanced. AC Milan have great experience, but likewise Bayern possess great resilience and determination. So it's a difficult one to call." http://www.kqzyfj.com/click-2051413-10351781 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news --------------------------------- [24] Carrick on belief --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: "We've got the belief, we've certainly got the quality, the desire and everything that goes with it. The confidence we have in each other has grown throughout the season. We've had setbacks along the way but we've always come back even stronger and I think tonight was a classic example of that. When you're at this stage, you need little things to go your way. If we have that little bit of luck, then we can do it. We've got as good a chance as anyone else now. At this stage every team has got an awful lot of quality and it's a big test. We'll be watching and enjoying the game tomorrow (between AC Milan and Bayern Munich). It was an incredible night, a really special occasion. There was a big build-up to the game and for it to go like that it was unbelievable. It's a night that I won't forget for a long while. The first goal was obviously crucial, it gave us a great chance of winning the tie. But to get seven... well, you can't believe that. Sometimes you get one, two, maybe three goals and then take your foot off the pedal, allowing the other team to come at you. But we didn't get sloppy at all tonight, we kept going and our forwards were unbelievable, causing so many problems." --------------------------------- [23] from Sportinglife --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: 'A Manchester United fans' spokesman claims violent clashes before the Champions League tie against Roma could have been avoided "in hindsight". Sean Bones, spokesman of the Manchester United Supporters' Trust, said it "may have been wise" to have let the Italian supporters into the ground early before home fans gathered en masse. Hundreds of supporters were caught up in ugly scenes outside Old Trafford before Tuesday night's game as a stand-off ensued between rival fans who were separated by riot police and dog handlers. Police arrested 21 supporters - 14 English and seven Italian - which marred United's 7-1 quarter-final, second-leg victory. Bones said: "The police said they dealt with a few small, isolated incidents and there was nothing on the scale of what happened to Manchester United fans in Rome last week. "In hindsight, it may have been wise to let the Roma fans into the ground early, but that is obviously something the club and the police will think about in the future. "Nothing should detract from the magnificent performance on the field by the players. "It was one of the greatest games in Manchester United's European history and no amount of superlatives could describe the quality of the game." Several Roma supporters criticised the delay in getting them into the stadium after many had arrived nearly three hours before kick-off. Some claimed that Old Trafford club officials refused their requests to go inside before home fans began gathering. They were bombarded with bottles and cans of beer as they were subjected to weapon searches at the away end turnstiles in Sir Matt Busby Way.' --------------------------------- [22] Poll in bother again? --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: 'Graham Poll has received the backing of the Premier League over allegations that he colluded with Alan Pardew to avoid a red card for Charlton midfielder Alex Song. Poll refused Pardew entry into the referee's room at half-time, during Monday's goalless draw with Reading, because it would have broken strict guidelines set out by the League Managers' Association about match-day etiquette. Managers are not allowed to speak to the officials until half an hour after the final whistle but when Pardew spoke after the Reading game, he claimed to have struck a deal with Poll. The Charlton manager claimed he had asked Poll to give him a "signal" if Song, booked in the first half for a reckless tackle, was one more foul from a red card. Song was then substituted when he received the "look". Pardew's precise version of events are disputed by Poll, who kept his own counsel yesterday but told the Premier League he did not enter any agreement with the Charlton manager. The controversial referee insists he had merely kept the lines of communication open as a man-management tool, twice speaking to Charlton captain Darren Bent, to warn him that Song was walking a tightrope and would be dismissed if he continued making fouls. "Communication between referees, players, management and the crowd as a whole is a beneficial and everyday part of the game," said a Premier League spokesman. Charlton's relegation rivals may not be quite so happy to accept the explanation as Pardew has escaped the possibility of seeing his influential midfielder, on loan from Arsenal, sidestep a potential suspension in the closing stages of the season. The likes of Paul Jewell, Chris Coleman, Neil Warnock and Alan Curbishley would normally applaud the idea of better dialogue with officials. Manager are regularly frustrated by the LMA guidelines, designed to provide a 30-minute cooling-off period. But the problem arises when one manager appears to be given an advantage over another because he can keep his player on the pitch for the maximum time before a nod from the referee signals his time to act. Gary Megson experienced the pressures of this stage of the season after two promotions and one relegation at West Brom knows the managers crave consistency and fairness above all else. Megson said: "This sort of thing is commonplace in pre-season friendlies when there's nothing on the result but in a league game at whatever level it should not be done. It is not a law. It's somebody helping somebody out. "The referee can't tip someone the wink that his player is treading a fine-line otherwise it must be done in every game at every stage of the season. You're creating a minefield. Other managers and other clubs have not had that luxury and I'm sure Alan Pardew and Charlton have not had it in the past. "Graham Poll is one of our top referees but, if this is what happened, he's overstepped his authority a bit. "I'm sure he would have done the same for Steve Coppell in the same game but it's not his job. His job is to interpret the rules and decide if it's a red card. If it is, he should send the player off." Pardew sparked the debate when he marched into the after-match press conference determined to thank Poll for what he thought was a good, commonsense performance. The Charlton boss said: "I went to see Graham Poll and I said to him: 'I need a signal if it's getting close and he sent me that signal so he had to come off. "Full credit to him because that's the sort of thing the game needs. That's the sort of thing that will make the game work better. No-one wants to see a team down to 10-men, I'm sure of it. I think that's within the rules of the game." There is no love lost between Pardew and Poll. Pardew launched a verbal assault on the referee in the tunnel after his first game in charge of Charlton, in December, when the ref had taken the advice of a linesman to award Fulham a free-kick in stoppage-time for a handball against Djimi Traore. Traore had not touched the ball but Franck Queudrue equalised from the set-piece to earn the Cottagers a 2-2 draw and a point which could still prove vital in the final relegation reckoning. "I am absolutely disgusted," fumed Pardew at the time. Reading's Leroy Lita faces the prospect of a three-match ban for butting Talal El Karkouri in an off-the-ball incident during Monday's game at The Valley. Poll missed the incident at the time and did not include it in his report but the FA's video panel are expected to look at the replays.' --------------------------------- [21] Other news --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: Fulham sack Coleman, and replace him with Lawrie Sanchez --------------------------------- [20] Mirror on Evans --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: 'ROY KEANE wants to keep on-loan Manchester United starlet Jonny Evans at Sunderland for another season. Outside, Italian men with hoods and scarves tied round their faces fought with police, lashed out at camera crews and attacked at random. Inside, 11 men in red and white, their faces alive and gleaming under the floodlights, also attacked at random and it was wonderful to behold. Manchester United's irresistibly-brilliant performance last night was the perfect riposte to the attempts of the Roma supporters to mar a tie between these teams for the second time in a week. After many of their supporters had been beaten senseless by Italian police last week, United used football to give Roma a taste of their own medicine. They sent them packing with the equivalent of a hefty kick up the backside. Sir Alex Ferguson's team washed away the stain of the violence that had erupted on Sir Matt Busby Way two hours before the game with a display of thrilling, attacking football that yielded three goals inside the first 18 minutes. Their first-half waltz, capped with a fourth goal from the superb Cristiano Ronaldo, must surely rank as one of the most remarkable 45 minutes in the history of even this great club. United's aggregate win was 8-3. It reads like a scoreline from a golden age when football was less inhibited and more swash-buckling. It reminded us that this United team are playing like throwbacks. The game was full of inspirational plot-lines, most notably the emotional return of Alan Smith to the big-time after so long struggling to recover from injury. Smith's goal was a beauty, so was Wayne Rooney's. Ronaldo's genius shone all night. Ryan Giggs played like a teenager. Michael Carrick came of age as a European footballer. United were magnificent and their vitality was exactly what football needed after the scenes that preceded the game. Once again, it appeared that the bulk of the responsibility for the skirmishes lay with the supporters of the Italian club just as it had done last Wednesday. Before the match, former boss Wilf McGuinness had walked on and invoked the spirit of the United fans who roared their team on to a famous win over Atletico Bilbao at Maine Road in 1956. The images of the violence have faded already. It is up to the Italians to deal with their problems while the rest of us treasure the memories of an enchanted night inside Old Trafford.' --------------------------------- [17] Simply put --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: Fergie "We can't wait for the semi-finals now" --------------------------------- [16] Fergie on Smith's patience --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: "I think everyone is pleased for Alan. His enthusiasm spreads through the team. The great quality he has had in the last year is patience. He has kept going and going and has got his reward tonight. I just think the early goal was difficult for Roma because it gave us the advantage and put them on the back foot. It gave us the confidence to get at them and the speed of our play caused them a lot of problems after that." --------------------------------- [15] Fergie on scoreline --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: "In a European sense it is my greatest night here. You never expect a scoreline like 7-1. But saying that the quality of our game was so high that once we scored two or three you felt we were going to do something big here. I think it was a special night. Hopefully it's not a one-off, but certainly the number of goals and the quality of them, it's difficult to think you are going to get that again. I said some months ago that the key to success at our club are the ones sitting on the bench. The players that have come in have responded to the challenge and I don't think they have looked out of place. We looked like men tonight. That is the kind of quality we have. It is difficult to lose two games at a club like this but we are able to respond to that pressure. I think they have to win something and hopefully they can do that. The way they are playing and enjoying their football they deserve it. But we have come to the part of the season where every match is a test. There are big games all the time and hopefully they can get through all that." http://www.kqzyfj.com/click-2051413-10351781 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news --------------------------------- [14] More from stunned Roma coach --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: "No-one imagined this performance. We suffered from a lack of experience. The first goal changed the face of the game. We lost our shape and played into their hands. The surprising thing was we had a similar amount of shots to United but every one of theirs seemed to find the corner of our net. We have played many good matches this season but we got it badly wrong in this one. We made a lot of mistakes and got punished heavily for them. We ended up chasing the game. But Manchester United deserved victory because of the way they played." --------------------------------- [13] Fergie - players have learnt --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: "The experience of playing AC Milan a couple of years ago was a disappointment, knowing we could have played better. Ronaldo and Rooney found it difficult but against Roma they were men. It is fantastic for Smith. He deserves it more than anyone. His attitude to play football is wonderful. He has got enthusiasm that spreads throughout the team and he trains like a beast. We've had two bad results but all great teams get over those mishaps. Recovery is the thing and we recovered against Roma." --------------------------------- [12] More Carrick --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: "We never expected to win 7-1 but the quality of our game was so high. It was a fantastic performance. Our speed of play and penetration was superb. It was a special night and every one of our goals were quality. We did our job against a very good team. The early goal gave us the confidence to go at Roma and that's absolutely the best night of European football we've had here. The scoreline tells you that." --------------------------------- [11] Fergie on Premiership --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: "The fact that three English teams should be in the semi-finals probably makes our league the best in Europe. Six or seven years ago Spanish football was the best. But on the evidence of this season Barcelona and Real Madrid are not as near to where they were in previous years. The competitive nature and the quality of the English game has improved over the seasons." --------------------------------- [10] Ronaldo on progressing --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: "Every player is very confident. They have a lot of belief in themselves. We lost in Rome but everyone still believed we would get through. It is an unbelievable result. To win 7-1 against Roma in a quarter-final is just great. It is amazing for the players and the club, but now we need to think about the semi-final. I am very happy to get those goals but the principle objective remains the team and what we do as a collective. I really have no preference for who we get now. This is the Champions League. It will be tough game no matter who we play next." http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-2051413-5042808 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-2051413-10387791 Hotels in Manchester Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news --------------------------------- [9] Totti gutted - sucks his thumb and sulks --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: "It is the saddest night of my sporting career. I had never lost to seven goals in a Champions League before. Each shot they took, they found the target. We have conceded three goals in seven minutes. We tried to react but in those conditions it was really difficult. I have to thank our travelling fans. They showed a lot of heart by coming here to support us. Unfortunately, we have come across a better team. Before the game I said that Cristiano Ronaldo is a great player. I hoped that we could have limit his play like we did in the opening game, but he has found every punch. I would love to have another opportunity in the future to play another game like this one. But with a different result. I would really want to give something back to our fans." --------------------------------- [8] BBC on trouble --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: 'Police and football fans were involved in a series of scuffles before the Champions League match between Manchester United and Roma on Tuesday. Greater Manchester Police officers made 21 arrests after confrontations around Old Trafford prior to kick-off. The worst incident involved several dozen mainly Roma fans but it was soon brought under control by officers with batons and police horses and dogs. Manchester United won the match 7-1 to reach the Champions League semi-finals. Hundreds of supporters were caught up in ugly scenes outside Old Trafford before the game. Eyewitnesses said a firework was fired by Italian fans at Manchester United supporters as bottles were hurled between rival groups. Police said 14 of those arrested were English and seven were Italian. Eight Manchester United fans, including one juvenile, were arrested on suspicion of committing public order offences, one was detained for allegedly possessing a bladed article, two were held on suspicion of causing affray, one for suspected criminal damage and one was arrested for a suspected breach of the peace. Two Italian supporters were held on suspicion of public order offences, another for allegedly possessing an offensive weapon, and a fourth for allegedly possessing an offensive weapon and committing a public order offence. Three others were arrested on suspicion of shoplifting, believed to be from the Manchester United Megastore. Roma supporters began trailing out of the ground at about 2215 BST and were led without incident to a facing car park where a fleet of coaches will take them back to the airport. There were no reports of any injuries. BBC production staff witnessed Manchester United fans throwing cans and glass bottles while police with dogs tried to separate the two sets of supporters. Police dog units and mounted officers became involved with a series of scuffles with supporters close to the club shop on Sir Matt Busby Way at about 1750 BST. Police sources told the BBC that the "isolated" trouble - which involved fans of both teams - was contained within five minutes. A statement released by Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers patrolling at Old Trafford ahead of the Manchester United versus Roma match have been required to deal with a number of small and isolated incidents. "The incidents are being dealt with as they happen and are being resolved quickly. "Some arrests were made in order to maintain the peace at the ground." BBC radio reporter James Alexander said extra security was very much in evidence outside the stadium. "There were lots of security personnel and extra police cars and vans around the stadium," he said. "It was classified as a Category C match which is the highest alert there is for a match at Old Trafford. It is on a par with a home match against Liverpool." Minister for Sport Richard Caborn said: "It's unfortunate that there have been some scuffles outside Old Trafford. "This was always going to be a highly charged game following the incident last week. Greater Manchester Police have used proportionate force in a potentially difficult situation and have handled it well." The visiting fans were in the second tier of the East Stand and there were no reports of trouble inside the stadium. Roma's managing director Rosella Sensi earlier insisted their fans would behave impeccably. Uefa is to investigate the trouble from the first leg, which could lead to disciplinary action for both United and Roma.' --------------------------------- [7] Roma coach stunned --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: Luciano Spalletti "It's difficult to explain what happened, especially because the team played well in the first 10 minutes. Everyone still believed we would get through tonight, but it is an unbelievable result. To win 7-1 against Roma in a quarter-final is just great. It is amazing for the players and the club, but now we need to think about the semi-final. I really have no preference who we get now." --------------------------------- [2] Fergie bouncing --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: "It was a fantastic performance by every one of our players. The speed of our play and our penetration was absolutely superb. That's absolutely the best night of European football we've had here. We never expected to win 7-1 but the quality of our game was so high," said Ferguson. The fact that three English teams are in the semis probably makes our league the best in Europe. Six or seven years ago Spanish football was the best. But on the evidence of this season Barcelona and Real Madrid are not as near to where they were in previous years, while the competitive nature and the quality of the English game has improved over the seasons." --------------------------------- [1] 7th Heaven Stats --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 by ed: Man Utd: Van der Sar, Brown, Ferdinand, Heinze, O'Shea (Evra 52), Ronaldo, Fletcher, Carrick (Richardson 73), Giggs (Solskjaer 61), Rooney, Smith.
