What sort of applications are you running and on what hardware? I haven't
run Solaris on Intel hardware, and I really don't know a lot of low level
details about either Linux or Solaris. Remember the background, though:
Solaris is written for 64-bit Sparc chips and ported to 32-bit Intel,
whereas Linux was written for 32-bit Intel chips and ported to 64-bit Sparc.
I only mention this because when you start mixing 32 and 64 bit hardware,
OSes, and apps you can get mixed results.

Customers (and bosses) seldom make decisions based solely on the technical
merits of a system. They often include training curves, cost, support,
personal preferences and other factors into the mix.

Personal preferences are very powerful. If you want to introduce something
new into his environment, you'll need to prove it's worth to him, not just
provide him with technical details. Find out what his priorities are. Has
he bought the performance-is-better-from-Solaris line? Showing him a
smaller, less expensive box outperforming his favorite (Solaris) is pretty
convincing (make sure, however that you know what results you'll get, and be
honest about your tests--don't be a microsoft!) Is he old school and thinks
Linux is 'unsupported'? Provide him with details on the support programs
from IBM, Compaq, Redhat, etc.

Anyway, I hope this short selling class helps!

Kevin
