I am working on a built-in way of doing this. It will look like this:
REM 1 TODO COMPLETE-THROUGH 2025-08-01 MSG %"Monthly Todo%" due %b.
Here is the output of various runs:
$ remind -dt /tmp/x.rem 2025-07-20
/tmp/x.rem(1): Trig = Monday, 1 September, 2025
No reminders.
$ remind -dt /tmp/x.rem 2025-09-01
/tmp/x.rem(1): Trig = Monday, 1 September, 2025
Reminders for Monday, 1st September, 2025:
Monthly Todo due today.
$ remind -dt /tmp/x.rem 2025-09-02
/tmp/x.rem(1): Trig = Monday, 1 September, 2025
Reminders for Tuesday, 2nd September, 2025:
Monthly Todo due yesterday.
$ remind -dt /tmp/x.rem 2025-10-01
/tmp/x.rem(1): Trig = Monday, 1 September, 2025
Reminders for Wednesday, 1st October, 2025:
Monthly Todo due 30 days ago.
Note that on July 20, the trigger date is September, and not August,
because you've said that August's task is already complete!
You have to update the COMPLETE-THROUGH to get it to stop nagging about
a past reminder. The calendar is unaffected; you always get "Monthly
Todo" on the first of the month.
I'm not there yet, but will soon have a beta for people to play with...
Regards,
Dianne.
