I wouldn't want to download songs from ituens because of the proprietary format, and what you're proposing seems like giving them 1,600 cd's, according to my thinking.
Apple lossless would be too big for your ipod, I assume, meaning you'd have to make a portable file as well. Maybe you could have EAC do FLAC to one directory AND 128k VBR mp3 to another directory for your ipod. I've seen a ripping machine, used by one of the commercial ripping services, that holds 100 cd's at a time.
