The DVD drives are on a separate IDE channel to the HDs but the thing I
don't get is if the drive is being slow then what's keeping the CPU
busy at 100%?  Surely if the drive is streaming data to the CPU so
slowly then it wouldn't need to run at 100% to keep pace with the
encoding process...

When I get home I'll try using the old DVD ROM drive, if that does the
same them there's obviously something else wrong which I'm missing.

Ever start something and wish you'd never bothered...
