I'm running the server on a Mac MINI 1.8GHz Core 2 with 2GB RAM. The MINI is doing NOTHING else as I bought it strictly for this. It's running 'headless' with nothing more than power, ethernet and an external 500GB drive attached. I access it remotely using Timbuktu Pro or mount its drive on the network to my G5 or MacBook Pro.
I've got the server priority set to HIGH (-16) and it never chokes. I've got Apple Activity Monitor running to watch the processor. ALAC (QuickTime) is taking less than 2% and realtime FLAC transcoding takes about 7%. Once the FLAC transcode has started it drops back to less than 2%. Processing for PERL is actually higher than either of the codecs, hitting around 4% on an average.
