I haven't tested this yet, but if you're talking about 
cacheing the entire preview for a segment, then a 
QPixmap won't do because its width is limited.  A 1- or 
8-bit QImage would be necessary (they can be any
size). 

In the longer term storing an image is likely a 
better idea than storing a list of rectangles.  It's 
only by coincidence that we can really get away with 
using rectangles like this for audio previews at the 
moment (because our previews are so limited) and this 
will surely change some time, for previews at high 
zoom levels. 

Of course, an image of an entire segment at the 
highest zoom level may bring its own problems in 
terms of memory usage.
