Back in 2001, I had a talk with Tony Koester. The "World's Greatest Hobby" was
just starting up. He said that they were going to aim at the boomers who found
those old trains in the attic and were thinking of getting the grandchildren
involved in trains. He said that S could take advantage of this and show them
that S was still a viable choice for them. Well we tried to get folks involved
in the WGH. There was the usual Z,N, HO,O,G stuff to fight, but we were
beginning to make headway. However, not too many folks got involved and things
have dwindled down over the years because of the non-involvment. Lot's of talk
and no action (sound familiar). Did everyone notice the age breakdown of the
last poll? I think it was Don Thompson who once said that "Every year I see the
same people, and they're a year older". There were several obituaries in the
last Dispatch. The hobby as a whole risks dying and the WGH is an attempt to
get new blood into the hobby. Losing battle? Time will tell.
