Re: TSM on SUN

2002-04-19 Thread Don France (TSMnews)

Ben,

It's highly recommended that (on Solaris) you use raw volumes for the TSM
file systems (ie, db & log)... due to severe performance penalties. Other
than that, all should be okay. There are other rules of thumb to consider,
especially on Sun boxes, regarding how much CPU power to support multiple
NIC's of varying speeds and bandwidth, as well as number of SCSI
drives/ports, etc. (search the archive for recent info about sizing the
server).

Lee,
does this EmailXtender utilize TSM or DiskXtender (which can be configured
to use TSM) or you have to deal with OTG's storage management (and have
storage dedicated to it)?
I know similar IBM software - CommonStore for Exchange. My knowledge of it
is same as yours but in the broshure there is info that so created
Exchange archives are stored in TSM (not surprisingly, both are IBM
products). I have no practical experience with this product so can not
recommend it too. But if you have to look for such product can you later
inform us briefly. I guess no one on this list is using those products but
would be happy to be refuted.

We also have this problem. One other idea you didn't mention is to

an email migration tool. EmailXtender by OTG is one product which will do
this. With this product the outlook users can move there PST (personal

You might think this will just move the problem. EmailXtender helps by
migrating old exchange items to TSM and replacing them with a 1K tag. The
exchange backups only backup the tag.

We have not tried the product so can not recommend. The information

Re: How Best to Suspend a Schedule

1. If you want to suspend it for a day or two advance the STARTDate
parameter as Edgardo suggested. If you want to disable it completely
update EXPiration parameter with any passed date. Later schedule can be
re-enabled with "upd sch exp=never"
2. Suspend is not possible but you can disable client from the schedule
using DELete ASSOCiation. I am curious why it is not elegant for you. Is
it because there is no trace left if you forgot which was the
node/schedule pair to re-enable? I feel satisfied with it.

As a relative newbie to TSM, I'd be interested to hear what is the easiest
way to temporarily:
1- Suspend a backup schedule from running.
2- Suspend an individual client's participation in a backup schedule.

I've accomplished #2 by removing the client schedule association, though I
don't regard this method to be particularly elegant.

Re: extra licences must be registered

2002-04-19 Thread Zlatko Krastev

Paolo,

you have at least 3 + 2 + 9 + 13 = 27 B/A clients contacted under
different names the server once or more. If a node is registered but not
used (i.e. not contacted the server) the server does not have an idea of
its OS. Probably you have no chance to be wrong stating that you have no
more than 25 boxes at the moment. The ought to come from TDPs using
nodename different than nodename of B/A client on the same box
(recommended configuration).
There was a discussion on this in January and the answer to your question
is regardless of how many nodes you've set-up for a single box it needs
only one *purchased* MgSysLAN/SAN license but will have more *in use*.
This was (and still is) for VBP. For EVBP in ISM v5.1 purchased license is
based on processors. I still wait for v5.1 media to come and have not seen
the output from 'q license' but suspect in use would be still
MgSysLAN/SAN.
Contact your IBM/Tivoli rep and get written answer from there pointing to
the Announcement Letters.

Dear gurus,
Tivoli needs an extra number of "Managed System for LAN" licences.

I have lots of scheduled backups of database via TDP for SQL (v2.2) and
TDP for Oracle (v2.2.0.2).

The TSM server (v4.2.1.9) runs on AIX 4.3.3.

My environment is:
2 AIX client
1 AIX client + 1 TDP for Oracle for AIX (on the same machine)
2 Linux86 client
7 Solaris client
2 Solaris client + 2 TDP for Oracle for SUN (on the same machine)
9 WinNT client
2 WinNT client + 2 TDP for SQL (on the same machine)

I think, I have to buy:
Licences for Managed System for LAN: 25 (3 AIX, 1 Linux86, 9 Solaris, 11
WinNT)
Licences TDP for Oracle: 3
Licences TDP for MS SQL Server: 2

This is an extract of the "q system" output:
**
*** ---> select platform_name,count(*) from nodes group by platform_name
**
PLATFORM_NAME Unnamed[2]
 ---
AIX3
Linux862
SUN SOLARIS9
TDP Oracle AIX 1
TDP Oracle SUN 2
WinNT 13

The problem is:
1) I have 11 WinNT clients, not 13!!!
2) Where are the 2 TDP MSSQLV2 NT clients?

This is an extract of the "q licence"

Number of Managed System for LAN in use: 30
!!! I have only 25 clients !!!

Number of TDP for Oracle in use: 3
The number it's right.

Number of TDP for MS SQL Server in use: 2
The number is't right.

Re: How Best to Suspend a Schedule

2002-04-19 Thread John Johnson

Instead of disablesched yes in the dsmserv.opt file, you can run
disable sessions from an admin client. Then again, this would prevent any
new backup sessions from starting. Not just those in a particular
schedule. Updating the schedule to some future start date is the best
solution.

For question # 2. A somewhat more elegant way of preventing a single
client from running a schedule is to lock the client using the lock node
command.

Re: TSM DB Corruption and DB Recovery - what happened ? (a saga , not a short story)

2002-04-19 Thread Prather, Wanda

I'm curious if Tivoli support gave you any idea of what TYPE of corruption
this error message indicates, and what they said about the DB mirror. With
MIRRORWRITEDB=SEQUENTIAL, you could (at least in theory) have had corruption
in the primary copy, but not the mirror copy. (Or maybe TSM doesn't issue
the message until it has tried both copies already?)

I would have tried to remove the primary copy of the DB from the
configuration, and come up with just the mirror, just to see if the result
was any different...

Subject: TSM DB Corruption and DB Recovery - what happened ? (a saga,
not a short story)

Our TSM DB was corrupted last week. Worse yet, it appears* that an
earlier DB Backup operation backed up a corrupted DB, but reported
"completed successfully". Efforts to restore from that DB Backup failed
twice, in the end costing us 24 hours restore time. We ended up having to
restore (rollback to) the prior-day DB Backup. Between the 1-Day rollback
and 24 hours lost time performing 2 failed DB Restores, we lost 2 night's
backups for 83 Unix Servers, including 1 night of otherwise-successful
backup processing.

(please review the "Summary of Events" appended to this email before
reading on)

We run TSM Server 4.1.2.0 on Solaris 2.6. Library is IBM 3494. DB >50GB
& under 90% Util. TSM DB & Log volumes are TSM-mirrored. TSM Log =4GB &
rarely over 10% Util. TSM LogMode=Normal. MirrorWrite-Log=Parallel.
MirrorWrite-DB=sequential. We do not perform automatic expiration or tape
reclamation, and no tape reclamation was performed on this or the prior
day.

We normally don't run client backups during our TSM DB Backups - but
that's just local practice & is a consequence of the sequence of our Daily
Task processing, not a policy. I know (and Tivoli Support confirmed) that
TSM is designed to support concurrent client backup session and DB Backup
processes (how else could you run 24x7 backups?), and previously we have
allowed certain long-running backups to run concurrently with DB Backups
before, without consequence. Still, for us, a concurrently-running client
backup and DB Backup is an
atypical event.

I would like experienced feedback on where things went awry in the
following series of events (appended below), opinions as to what step may
have caused the DB corruption and subsequent apparently-corrupted DB
Backup (despite reporting successful completion).

* Tivoli Support asserted that:
 - in TSM 4.1 the DB Backup operation does not perform robust consistency
checking, so could backup a corrupt DB and still report success -
apparently an APAR exists on this. Can anyone confirm this?
 - consistency checking Tivoli has been improved & is more robust in TSM
4.1 and/or 5.1. Can anyone confirm this?
 - it is impossible to incorporate thorough consistency-checking, as is
performed by Audit DB, in presumed-daily DB Backups because of the elapsed
time it requires. On a >50GB DB such as ours, Tivoli asserted that Audit
DB would take over 50 hours (obviously not possible twice daily). Can
anyone with similar configuration (>50GB TSM DB on Solaris) confirm this
time estimate for Audit DB?

I would also welcome any opinions/ideas how to recover that
apparently-corrupted DB Backup (I'm still not 100% convinced it is). We
want to do this on a test server to salvage the prior nights backup data
and also salvage the Activity Log for further review, if possible. All
copypool and DB Backup tapes from that day were pulled/preserved. I don't
think there's a way for us to re-incorporate the lost data back into our
production TSM backups easily - but brilliant ideas are welcome. Even so,
we would at least regain the ability to access/restore the prior night's
backup data from those preserved copypool tapes, which would mitigate
potential service impact of this incident by 50% (just 1 day lost, not 2).

Are there any methods for restoring only selected parts of a TSM DB ?

- rsvp, thanks (experienced respondents only, please)

Summary of Events:

1) A rogue client backup started just before our morning DB Backup (1st
of 2 scheduled daily full DB Backups). This was after a scripted check to
ensure that no client backups were running (none were) and just prior to
start of the DB Backup (we think). The check for client sessions is not so
much to ensure nothing runs during DB Backup - it's to ensure that all
client data reaches the diskpool and then gets migrated or copied to tape
pools before the DB Backup starts. Still, for us, the rogue client backup
was an atypical event.

2) The DB Backup stalled immediately, sitting at 0 pages backed up for
over an hour, but TSM Services were not hung & did not fail. The client
backup was progressing fine & pushing a lot of data. To resolve th

Re: Outlook PST files

2002-04-19 Thread Rushforth, Tim

In testing I've done, the modified date is updated on a .PST file just by
opening and closing outlook. Some info I've found on a newsgroup stated:

"PST files initiate a locking mechanism when you access them (access, not
necessarily open). A PST file is a database. This database is continuously
interrogated with searches and sorts by Outlook to get the data it needs to
display, import,... whatever. There is a special reserved area in the
database Outlook writes to when it accesses the file. Information about the
user and computer currently accessing the file is placed here. This allows
other processes on that particular computer (invisible queries to build the
folder hierarchy in the Outlook Folder List, for example) to access the file
while effectively locking-out access to anyone else until the file is
closed. Without this exclusive access, a PST could be easily corrupted by
someone changing parts of that database at the same time. Without the
ability to record in the PST file itself who has access to it right now,
there is no way to lock out others while allowing the "right" person
access."

So along with breaking up the .PST files, you may also have to make them
read-only. Some of our users have setup a separate archive pst for each
year, then they are only modifying the most recent one.

Subject: extra licences must be registered

Dear gurus,
Tivoli needs an extra number of "Managed System for LAN" licences.

I have lots of scheduled backups of database via TDP for SQL (v2.2) and TDP
for Oracle (v2.2.0.2).

The TSM server (v4.2.1.9) runs on AIX 4.3.3.

My environment is:
2 AIX client
1 AIX client + 1 TDP for Oracle for AIX (on the same machine)
2 Linux86 client
7 Solaris client
2 Solaris client + 2 TDP for Oracle for SUN (on the same machine)
9 WinNT client
2 WinNT client + 2 TDP for SQL (on the same machine)

I think, I have to buy:
Licences for Managed System for LAN: 25 (3 AIX, 1 Linux86, 9 Solaris, 11
WinNT)
Licences TDP for Oracle: 3
Licences TDP for MS SQL Server: 2

This is an extract of the "q system" output:
**
*** ---> select platform_name,count(*) from nodes group by platform_name
**
PLATFORM_NAME Unnamed[2]
 ---
AIX3
Linux862
SUN SOLARIS9
TDP Oracle AIX 1
TDP Oracle SUN 2
WinNT 13

The problem is:
1) I have 11 WinNT clients, not 13!!!
2) Where are the 2 TDP MSSQLV2 NT clients?

This is an extract of the "q licence"

Number of Managed System for LAN in use: 30
!!! I have only 25 clients !!!

Number of TDP for Oracle in use: 3
The number it's right.

Number of TDP for MS SQL Server in use: 2
The number is't right.

Del,

The only thing in the log file you're asking about what what I put in my
original email with the return code=255.
04/18/2002 10:28:41 Trying port number 56582
04/18/2002 10:28:41 Obtained new port number on which to listen.
04/18/2002 11:59:06 ANS1512E Scheduled event 'DOMARCH_M-F' failed. Return
code = 255.

Yesterday I suggested they check the environment, since the second server
works there is no way it's on my end. I see that the 12 noon schedule
finally ran on this server so it looks like they've fixed the problem.

way to temporarily:
1- Suspend a backup schedule from running.
2- Suspend an individual client's participation in a backup schedule.

I've accomplished #2 by removing the client schedule association, though I
don't regard this method to be particularly elegant.

Doing that will disable all schedules, not just the backup. From the web
interface - you pick the schedule you want to stop and in the drop down you
will see "activate or deactivate command schedule".

TDP for ESS for Oracle databases

2002-04-19 Thread Peter Park

Hi,
This problem could happen due to any one of the following four reasons.

1) Your startup file(setup file) doesn't have any target disk defined.
 - You are required to provide the possible candidates as target
disk in the setup file.

2) The size of the target disk has to be same as the size of the source
disk.

3) The target disk has to be in the same lss with the source disk.

4) Target disk is already used for other flashcopy, so it is occupied by
other process.

Please make sure you had met those 4 requirements in your setup file.

Regards,
Peter.

Hi,

We are trying to get it all work, backing up an Oracle database with RMAN
and TDP for Oracle for AIX and TDP for ESS for Oracle Databases. It all
works untill we installed the TDP for ESS. Most of the startup-scripts is
clear to us. Only we are getting an error returncode 2, meaning something
as
could not found the taget disk. We have the next envoiroment:

ESS (microcode 1.5.1.13)
RS/6000 H50 produktion oracle server with 2 ESS luns for the Oracle
database
(AIX 4.3.3 ML 9 and Oracle 8.1.7)
RS/6000 H50 backupserver with 2 ESS luns for the flash (AIX 4.3.3 ML 9 and
Oracle 8.1.7)
RS/6000 H80 TSM-server running TSM server 4.2.1.11 (AIX 4.3.3 ML9)
TDP for Oracle for Unix 2.2
TDP for ESS for Oracle Databases 1.1.1

Maybe someone has it allready working an can give us some explanation on
the
startup-file or even can give us an copy of it with some explanation.

Re: How Best to Suspend a Schedule

2002-04-19 Thread Edgardo Moso

It will disable all schedules. What do you like one schedule which has a
lot of nodes associated? or client only.

If you like to disable the schedule involving all associated nodes...this
is what I did...quite rude but it works..

"upd schedstartd=07/31/2002.I advance the start
date to avoid starting the next day.
You can determine the day what you want. If you dont like the scheudle to
run on 04/20/2002 then set it to 04/21/2002.

Re: system params for Solaris on TSM upgrade to 4.1.2.0(Resolved - sort of)

2002-04-19 Thread Jolliff, Dale

The admin replied that he applied the "latest cluster" and that did the
trick, but wasn't sure which one fixed it, and didn't appear to be sure of
what he had before .

So, anyway - Sol 8 requires the latest cluster of patches in order to avoid
kernel panic when initializing the network at boot time after the
/etc/system changes are made.
My hunch is that it centers around "set rpcmod:svc_default_stksize=0x4000",
but that's just a wild guess...

Dale,
Which solaris version are your running 7 or 8

Don't forget to apply the various patches for each.. Platform and server..

set rpcmod:svc_default_stksize=0x4000
this parameter caused some panics here with out the patch for the solaris
this is resolved by the big patch for your solaris version ..

Re: Outlook PST files

2002-04-19 Thread Doug Thorneycroft

We moved all our outlook files to their own server, and are using the native
NTBackup utility to back them directly to tape. No archives or long term
retention. This not only cut down the time required to run backups, but also
reduced the time required to backup our primary pools to copy pools,
freed up a bunch of tapes, and reduced the need for reclamation processing.

That would involve recycling the server, wouldn't it? I'm
guessing from Paul's e-mail that he's looking for something he
can do online.

What I've done in the past is update the start date of the
schedule to the following day, that way it won't run in the
coming evening, but will pick up again the next day without me
having to intervene.

Re: Backup filespec

2002-04-19 Thread Andrew Raibeck

What is happening is that TSM is backing up the named object, which is
just 'data'. TSM does not take the extra step to assume that if 'data' is
a directory, that its contents should also be included.

The ending slash tells TSM that you want to back up the contents of the
'data' directory. So as you found, the syntax would be:

   incremental /ps/odstest/data/

And if you want subdirectories of 'data' backed up, you would also need
the -subdir=yes option (unless it is already in your options file or you
specified it from the command line when starting dsmc).

I have a customer who tried:
  incremental -verbose /ps/odstest/data
and several objects were inspected but not were backed up.

He then tried:
   backup -verbose /ps/odstest/data
and that backed up the two sub directories but no files.

Finally he tried:
  incremental -verbose /ps/odstest/data/
and that backed up the files.

Why (or when) does the ending slash make a difference? He claims he
has similar incrementals on other machines that work without the ending
slash? Is there a logical explanation for that?

The machine being backed up is running Aix 4.3.3 with the TSM 4.2.1.15
backup client. The server is on OS390 2.10 running TSM 4.2.1.9.

Thanks in advance.

That would involve recycling the server, wouldn't it? I'm
guessing from Paul's e-mail that he's looking for something he
can do online.

What I've done in the past is update the start date of the
schedule to the following day, that way it won't run in the
coming evening, but will pick up again the next day without me
having to intervene.

database problem (resolved)

2002-04-19 Thread Burak Demircan

Hi Everybody,
I solved my problem about TSM database which seems small but occupies big size.
The solution was following:

I  create /dev/mt0   device for my 8mm external tape (DO NOT USE things like
/dev/rmt0 like you see on AIX---> lsdev -Cc tape ).
Because people said that manual libraries are defined just in this way (I didnt
know because I see automated ones)
Later I used the following commands:

./dsmserv unloaddb dev=8mmclass scratch=yes
./dsmserv loadformat 1 /adsm/recovery_log/reclog.dsm 3
/adsm/database/datafull1_m /adsm/database/datafull2_m /adsm/database/adsm_db09
./dsmserv loaddb dev=8mmclass vol=mbt2

Now my database is defragmented. And the utiliy I see on "q db" result is just
as
I expected.

We just recently upgraded to 4.2 from 3.1 - and while we did upgrade some
clients - the ones we didn't worked just fine.. (Solaris, NT, Netware,
Linux, AIX)

Hope that helps. It was a fairly smooth upgrade on an AIX server. We did run
into some quirky settings on our Retain deleted files that caused expiration
to never finish. When we changed the settings from keeping a copy forever to
a set period of time like 90 days, and we had deleted 19,000,000 files off
our mail server - everything was perfect.

Let me preface this with, I am not sure how to completely ask these
questions since I don't have all of the details but hopefully someone can
give me some idea of how TSM can/will handle this, if at all possible.

Current configuration: TSM 4.1 on OS/390 using 3590B tape drives in a
3494 ATL

Requirements as I understand them: Setup a off-location "hot site" backup
TSM server that will have copies of everything the main server and/or
other TSM server (we are working on splitting the TSM traffic/load onto
another TSM server) has. The "hot site" server will probably be an AIX
box with 3590E (possibly FC) drives.

I have looked into the source/target server issue but am a little confused
since the "target" server will only see things that come from the "source"
server as archive objects.

If the building with the "source" server burns down (and this same
building also houses a majority of the clients that are backed up !), how
would the "target" server be used to restore all of the client nodes ?

How about the database backups that are sent to the "target" server ? What
use are they if you have to have the "source" server to identify what is
on the "target" server ?

Should I/could I setup database mirror volumes on a remote (target ?)
server over simple IP connections or is this only possible with DASD using
XRC processesespecially since the current, main database is on OS390 ?
If this was moved to an AIX box, how would this be handled ? NFS ???

As you can tell, any and all guidance is greatly appreciated !!!

Hello fellow *SMers,

even if I do not like the answer we've found it.
According to IBM EMEA Announcement Letter ZP02-0172
(http://www.ibmlink.ibm.com/emealets&parms=H_ERIFZP020172), Section
"Ordering IBM Tivoli Products"
"One or more charge units are associated with each product. These charge
units are:
- Processors managed by the product
- Clients managed by the product
- Distributed servers managed by the product
- zSeries processors managed by the product
- Processors in which the managing server is installed"
Processors are based upon TSM server and TSM *nodes* processors if they
are servers in customer application environment. If it is a workstation
(appl. client) it requires "client" license and no "processors".
So if we have an (imaginary) ISM installation consisting of dual-processor
TSM server, cluster of two four-processor Oracle servers, uniprocessor
file server, uniprocessor MDC and 20 dual-processor Xeon/2GHz CAD
stations, we would need 12 "processor" and 20 "client" charge units for
IBM TSM (5698-ISM) or IBM TSM EE (5698-ISE) and (optional) eight
processors for IBM TSM for Databases (5698-APD).
Right now I cannot calculate all possible configurations nor predict any
averages or stats but for some configurations price would change slightly
while for some others will drop significantly. OTOH I can make (not so)
artificial configuration which would have an increased price.
This raises the issue how to migrate Tivoli Management Points from
Value-Based Pricing to Processors and Clients in Enhanced VBP. Also
another question to ask is - does a customer need to buy additional
licenses to keep its license compliance. This is another story and I have
to dig more.

*   Force .pst archive rules
* reduce frequency of .pst updates (e.g., limit to 1/week; wishful

on weekend)
* reduce size of .pst by creating new pst files every "so often"
* Storing .pst files centrally rather than locally.

I am looking to for suggestions on how to cope with this ever growing

C:\WINNT\system32> mtlib -los3494p3 -d -fmt3.0.0.2

where the library in question is a remote 3494 containing a 3590E1A drive,
but it just seems to hang

I get output for a 'query mount' (below) so there definitely is
communication between the box and the library.

C:\WINNT\system32> mtlib -los3494p3 -qM

Should i be using some other utility? Could there be an underlying network
issue/driver level? I don't seem to be able to find any mtlib documentation
that might prove helpful - if anyone could point me in the right direction
i'd be much obliged.

Paul,

RC=425 for Exchange means there was an Exchange API error.
This can mean a variety of things, but essentially the
Exchange Server did not like something that
you were trying to do. This could be an internal Exchange Server problem or
that you were attempting an invalid scenario.

To find out what is happening you should examine the
TDP for Exchange log file (usually tdpexc.log) found in the
TDP for Exchange installation directory (unless you redirected it.) The log
file may give you an idea what the problem is. It should have the detailed
Exchange Server API message.

Also, you should check the standard output of the tdpexcc command. (Redirect
it to a log file in scheduled events to capture it.)

Also check the Windows Event Log for any errors or warnings coming from
Exchange itself. If all that fails to show the problem, please call IBM
support so that a trace can be gathered and examined.

Re: DSMC question

2002-04-19 Thread Andrew Raibeck

Off-hand I would not suspect a bug, but perhaps something else.

For one thing, try using * for your specification instead of *.*, i.e.:

   q backup c:\*

or

   q backup c:\

(the * is implied)

The reason for this is that files that do not contain an extension will
not appear in your list. This is most likely not your problem, but I
thought I would point it out anyway for your future reference (and save
you a little typing :-) ).

Try this:

Go to the GUI and take a careful look at the name of the file space. When
you open up the "File Level" icon, you should see file spaces like this:

   \\storman\c$ (C:)
   \\storman\e$ (E:)

(these are mine, your machine name and drive letters will be different).

Then go to the command line, and do this:

   q ba \\storman\c$\

(substitute your own file space name, and don't forget the ending
backslash.)

Does that make a difference?

I am not sure what happened on your machine. But if your machine name
changed, or your file space was renamed, then this might explain what you
are seeing. For example, if I change my machine name to \\raibeck, then I
would see a problem like yours. because when I specify C:, it really looks
for \\raibeck\c$. But since my existing file spaces are named
\\storman\x$, I will get the "no files found" message.

Re: Offsite Mirror of TSM server

There are quite a few options you can look into. CNT builds protocol
converters that you can use to convert FCP <-> IP <-> FCP (fiber channel
protocol) and accomplish data mirroring via a WAN connection. Other DWDM /
Dark Fiber options exist too, and can play well with the larger disk
subsystem's software based copy services such as PPRC (IBM) and SDRF (EMC).
Collectively, these are all high cost solutions, but offer lots of
flexibility and HA type configurations. Other, less expensive methods/tools
probably exist too--

If the building with the "source" server burns down (and this same
building also houses a majority of the clients that are backed up !), how
would the "target" server be used to restore all of the client nodes ?

How about the database backups that are sent to the "target" server ? What
use are they if you have to have the "source" server to identify what is
on the "target" server ?

Should I/could I setup database mirror volumes on a remote (target ?)
server over simple IP connections or is this only possible with DASD using
XRC processesespecially since the current, main database is on OS390 ?
If this was moved to an AIX box, how would this be handled ? NFS ???

Subject: sense errors

Does anyone have any ideas on the following errors that showed up in our TSM
activity log? We have TSM 4.1.3 server running on AIX 4.3.3ML9, connected to
a SpectraLogic HVD 64000/Gator (with Sony SDX-500C drives).

We've sent the sense code info to Tivoli as well as SpectraLogic, but they
point at each other or general "SCSI" problems. We've already swapped out
the cables, the terminators, even one of the SCSI cards. We've cleaned the
drives, changed the filters, re-connected the cables, etc. Even though all
of the below are on DRIVE1, it actually happens to all six of our drives
eventually.

I checked the TSM Messages manual, and it's not that helpful.

* I'm writing not so much to get a definitive answer (as that's
obviously something specific to our site & setup), but more for other clues
or leads that I could investigate. Maybe Tivoli, SpectraLogic, and our own
group have all been looking in the wrong direction. *

By the way, we get these on a more-or-less regular basis, like one set of
three (such as below) per week or every other week.

Thanks for any leads.

TDP for Domino Quincy

2002-04-19 Thread Michael Loggins

After I install TDP for Domino , I turn the archive transaction logging on.
Once the Domino Server restarts, I try to get into the TDP for Domino GUI (also
happens with Command Line) and I get a quincy error. Once I disable transaction
logging, I can get in fine, but obviously, I am not backing up the most recent
information. Anyone had this issue? Any Suggestions?

Re: extra licences must be registered

2002-04-19 Thread David Longo

What happened is when TDP SQL is actually backing up and you
run your select, then you will get the correct count. As TDP SQL
runs from an NT client and you (probably) have scheduler setup
on the client, then when it finishes, the scheduler recontacts the
server for next schedule and the "paltform_name" will be WinNT.

You can do a "q node f=d" while a TDP SQL is running and then
again after to see this in action.

As has been discussed recently about verifying backups, this is another
step that has to be checked several ways to get the correct result.

Dear gurus,
Tivoli needs an extra number of "Managed System for LAN" licences.

I have lots of scheduled backups of database via TDP for SQL (v2.2) and TDP for Oracle
(v2.2.0.2).

Licences for Managed System for LAN: 25 (3 AIX, 1 Linux86, 9 Solaris, 11 WinNT)
Licences TDP for Oracle: 3
Licences TDP for MS SQL Server: 2

This is an extract of the "q system" output:
**
*** ---> select platform_name,count(*) from nodes group by platform_name
**
PLATFORM_NAME Unnamed[2]
 ---
AIX3
Linux862
SUN SOLARIS9
TDP Oracle AIX 1
TDP Oracle SUN 2
WinNT 13

The problem is:
1) I have 11 WinNT clients, not 13!!!
2) Where are the 2 TDP MSSQLV2 NT clients?

This is an extract of the "q licence"

Number of Managed System for LAN in use: 30
!!! I have only 25 clients !!!

Number of TDP for Oracle in use: 3
The number it's right.

Number of TDP for MS SQL Server in use: 2
The number is't right.

Michael,

Hmmm. I haven't seen this... Make sure you are running
TDP for Domino 1.1.2 (which is the latest).

What version of Domino Server are you running?

You may want to call IBM service so some tracing can be
gathered.

Yi,

Yes... You can do this... make sure you say
/RECOVERY=NO when restoring the database
from TDP for SQL so that recovery won't be
run against the database. It will leave it in
a mode that will allow you to restore the
associated logs via non-TDP methods (the same way
you took the log backups, except with the RESTORE command.)

Outlook PST files

2002-04-19 Thread Bruce Lowrie

All,
Each day, roughly 99% of the changed data on my Windows file and print
servers is attributable to .pst files. For my Wan clients I have implemented
Adaptive subfile differencing but still running marathon backups of some
these clients.
So given that pst files dramatically impact WAN (and to some degree LAN)
backups, how can I address this?
* Don't backup .pst? (Most likely not an option)
*   Force .pst archive rules
* reduce frequency of .pst updates (e.g., limit to 1/week; wishful
thinking would be this would occur on Fri so that large backups would occur
on weekend)
* reduce size of .pst by creating new pst files every "so often"
* Storing .pst files centrally rather than locally.
*   Other - thoughts, anyone?

I am looking to for suggestions on how to cope with this ever growing
menace.

Unfortunately, cant do that.

The "local" machines will be attached to the TSM server via SAN/FC, some
going directly to 3590E drives.

We are talking about hundreds of GB of data, daily !

Just exactly how do we mirror a "volume" across an IP link, since that is

2002-04-19 Thread David E Ehresman

I have a customer who tried:
  incremental -verbose /ps/odstest/data
and several objects were inspected but not were backed up.

He then tried:
   backup -verbose /ps/odstest/data
and that backed up the two sub directories but no files.

Finally he tried:
  incremental -verbose /ps/odstest/data/
and that backed up the files.

Why (or when) does the ending slash make a difference? He claims he
has similar incrementals on other machines that work without the ending
slash? Is there a logical explanation for that?

The machine being backed up is running Aix 4.3.3 with the TSM 4.2.1.15
backup client. The server is on OS390 2.10 running TSM 4.2.1.9.

TSM DB Corruption and DB Recovery - what happened ? (a saga, not a short story)

2002-04-19 Thread Kent Monthei

Still, for us, a concurrently-running client backup and
DB Backup is an
atypical event.

I would like experienced feedback on where things went awry in the
following series of events (appended below), opinions as to what step may
have caused the DB corruption and subsequent apparently-corrupted DB
Backup (despite reporting successful completion).

* Tivoli Support asserted that:

Summary of Events:

1) A rogue client backup started just before our morning DB Backup (1st
of 2 scheduled daily full DB Backups). This was after a scripted check to
ensure that no client backups were running (none were) and just prior to
start of the DB Backup (we think). The check for client sessions is not so much to
ensure nothing runs during DB Backup - it's to ensure that all
client data reaches the diskpool and then gets migrated or copied to tape
pools before the DB Backup starts. Still, for us, the rogue client backup
was an atypical event.

2) The DB Backup stalled immediately, sitting at 0 pages backed up for
over an hour, but TSM Services were not hung & did not fail. The client
backup was progressing fine & pushing a lot of data. To resolve the
stalled DB Backup, we cancelled the client backup session (no effect). We
then cancelled the DB Backup process (no effect - it entered & sat for an
hour in 'Cancel Pending' state).

3) At that point, we decided to halt/restart the TSM Server process.
'dsmserv' came back up normally.

4) We then repeated the 1st DB Backup, which then progressed normally in
the usual time and reported successful completion. We continued with Daily Task
processing, which went smoothly up to the
2nd DB Backup.

5) Almost immediately after startup (0 DB pages backed up), the 2nd DB
Backup process failed with a 'dballoc.c / SMP page mismatch /
initialization of DB page allocator failed' error (something to that
effect).

6) We decided to halt/resta

Hrm, what happens if we only have media for 2.1, 3.7 and 4.1? I don't know
if there are any versions between 2.1 and 3.x, but we may not be able to
obtain them (since they're unsupported now and have been for some time).

However, an upgrade from 2.1 to 3.7 may be all we want to do, as I think
that's the version in use elswhere in the company.

How Best to Suspend a Schedule

2002-04-19 Thread Kilmer, Paul

As a relative newbie to TSM, I'd be interested to hear what is the easiest
way to temporarily:
1- Suspend a backup schedule from running.
2- Suspend an individual client's participation in a backup schedule.

I've accomplished #2 by removing the client schedule association, though I
don't regard this method to be particularly elegant.

Thanks in advance.

> Information Store from server NNSE8 failed, rc = 425.

Paul,

RC=425 for Exchange means there was an Exchange API error.
This can mean a variety of things, but essentially the
Exchange Server did not like something that
you were trying to do. This could be an internal Exchange
Server problem or that you were attempting an invalid scenario.

To find out what is happening you should examine the
TDP for Exchange log file (usually tdpexc.log) found in the
TDP for Exchange installation directory (unless you redirected it.)
The log file may give you an idea what the problem is.
It should have the detailed Exchange Server API message.

Also, you should check the standard output of the tdpexcc command.
(Redirect it to a log file in scheduled events to capture it.)

Also check the Windows Event Log for any errors or warnings coming
from Exchange itself. If all that fails to show the problem,
please call IBM support so that a trace can be gathered and examined.

Thanks,

extra licences must be registered

2002-04-19 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dear gurus,
Tivoli needs an extra number of "Managed System for LAN" licences.

I have lots of scheduled backups of database via TDP for SQL (v2.2) and TDP for Oracle
(v2.2.0.2).

Licences for Managed System for LAN: 25 (3 AIX, 1 Linux86, 9 Solaris, 11 WinNT)
Licences TDP for Oracle: 3
Licences TDP for MS SQL Server: 2

This is an extract of the "q system" output:
**
*** ---> select platform_name,count(*) from nodes group by platform_name
**
PLATFORM_NAME Unnamed[2]
 ---
AIX3
Linux862
SUN SOLARIS9
TDP Oracle AIX 1
TDP Oracle SUN 2
WinNT 13

The problem is:
1) I have 11 WinNT clients, not 13!!!
2) Where are the 2 TDP MSSQLV2 NT clients?

This is an extract of the "q licence"

Number of Managed System for LAN in use: 30
!!! I have only 25 clients !!!

Number of TDP for Oracle in use: 3
The number it's right.

Number of TDP for MS SQL Server in use: 2
The number is't right.

> Executing Operating System command or script:
>c:\commands\domarc.cmd

Geoff,

There is not enough information here to find out
what is going on. You didn't show the
contents of "e:\logs\domagent_err.log".
That is the TDP for Domino log file that
may show what failed when running the command.

There are also errors in the command file that you show.

1.) echo Current date is:e:\logs\domagent_arc
There should only be two ">>" not four.

2.) echo Current date is:e:\logs\domagent_arc
Didn't you mean "e:\logs\domagent_arc.log"?

3.) echo Current time is:e:\logs\domagent_arc
There should only be two ">>" not four.

4.) echo Current time is:e:\logs\domagent_arc
Didn't you mean "e:\logs\domagent_arc.log"?

5.) start /B domdsmc archivelog
/adsmoptfile=c:\progra~1\tivoli\tsm\domino\dsm.opt
/logfile=e:\logs\domagent_err.log >>e:\logs\domagent_arc.log
I am assuming that this line is really all on one line
in the batch file. If not, it needs to be.

6.) One small thing I see, which may or may not be
a problem is that you have "cd /d %dom_dir%",
but you never actually change to the "C:" drive
within the batch file... and so if the default
drive is "D:", this will not work.

I am also wondering if the domdsmc command ran
at all since the output of the command was supposed
to be redirected to "e:\logs\domagent_arc.log".
What you show for that file does not have any
of the normal output from the domdsmc command.
For example, I would at least expect to see
the copyright banner for TDP for Domino.

A good thing to do is to make sure the batch file
runs manually before scheduling it.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Del

Re: TSM on SUN

2002-04-19 Thread Francisco Molero

Hi,

My recomendation is:

1.- A IBM lto library.
2.- AIX instead of SUN.

Because always you can complain about the TSM or HW to
IBM.
I know a problem in SUN and I am not sure if the pb
has been solved. Sometimes the db backup under Solaris
starts one hour more or less after the tape is mounted
in the drive, it is the only pb I have found only
under Solaris.

The performance is more or less equal, and both work
with LAN FREE,

mtlib demount on NT

2002-04-19 Thread Thomas, Matthew

Folks,

We've got TSM Server 4.1.0.0 on WinNT4 Could anyone advise what s ithe best
method for dismounting a cartridge left on a drive as a result of a TSM
server reboot.
I've tried an mtlib demount:

C:\WINNT\system32> mtlib -los3494p3 -d -fmt3.0.0.2

where the library in question is a remote 3494 containing a 3590E1A drive,
but it just seems to hang

I get output for a 'query mount' (below) so there definitely is
communication between the box and the library.

C:\WINNT\system32> mtlib -los3494p3 -qM

Should i be using some other utility? Could there be an underlying network
issue/driver level? I don't seem to be able to find any mtlib documentation
that might prove helpful - if anyone could point me in the right direction
i'd be much obliged.

TIA
Matt

Think you are out of luck here.
We run a product called Nettape which allows ADSM on AIX to share silos with TSM

No errormessage on startup /usr/tivoli/tsm/devices/bin/rc.acs_ssi, but

The connection to libstation basically works, as I have ssi installed on

IP connectivity is OK, rpcinfo shows corresponding services registered,
nameresolution works bothways.
Suspicious is, that when I kill the ssi and mini_el, STATUS_QUEUE_FAILURE

internet address of 0.0.0.0, which obviousely is not really healthy...
Any idea about what apart from the IP adress of the LibStation server I can

I am trying to unload db to 8mm external drive. I have properly defined it
as
manul library and labelled my tape.
But I can not use unloaddb. What could be the problem?

Re: unloaddb problem

2002-04-19 Thread Pétur Eyþórsson

doesn't matter if you can label the tape or not.

You need to verify the availably, by taking database backup, backup, backup
stg.

the label libvolume command is unaffected by the no mount point awilible.

I have seen libraries witch you can label the tapes, but you cant mount for
backup of any kind.

hope this helps.

This error is probably device class related or there is an error in your
library configuration.

Make sure you can use the device class you are referring to.

Try using the drive for other use, backup, copy storage pool e.g.

TDP for ESS for Oracle databases

2002-04-19 Thread Loket AMEV I&P TSM Beheer

Hi,

We are trying to get it all work, backing up an Oracle database with RMAN
and TDP for Oracle for AIX and TDP for ESS for Oracle Databases. It all
works untill we installed the TDP for ESS. Most of the startup-scripts is
clear to us. Only we are getting an error returncode 2, meaning something as
could not found the taget disk. We have the next envoiroment:

ESS (microcode 1.5.1.13)
RS/6000 H50 produktion oracle server with 2 ESS luns for the Oracle database
(AIX 4.3.3 ML 9 and Oracle 8.1.7)
RS/6000 H50 backupserver with 2 ESS luns for the flash (AIX 4.3.3 ML 9 and
Oracle 8.1.7)
RS/6000 H80 TSM-server running TSM server 4.2.1.11 (AIX 4.3.3 ML9)
TDP for Oracle for Unix 2.2
TDP for ESS for Oracle Databases 1.1.1

Maybe someone has it allready working an can give us some explanation on the
startup-file or even can give us an copy of it with some explanation.

Thanks in advance

Upgrade from ADSM 2.1 to TSM 3.7 or 4.1

2002-04-19 Thread Riddoch, John E SITI-ITDSEP3

We have an existing server running ADSM 2.1 (yes, I know... it was set
up in '95 and hasn't been upgraded since...) which we're looking to
update.

>From the TSM installation instructions, it says that you can install
TSM on an old ADSM installation and it will automatically update the
database; has anyone done an upgrade from such an old version to
either TSM 3.7 or 4.2? If so, anything I should be aware of (aside
from the obvious issues of backing up all the database etc before
doing the upgrade)?

Thanks in advance.

TSM Journal

2002-04-19 Thread Ilja G. Coolen

Hi there.

We are running the Journal service on some of our biggest NT-boxes. We need
to exclude some dirs from the Journal-monitor, so we put them in the Journal
exlude stanza like the manual and the examples describe.
BUT, the files are not excluded. I tried various settings using wildcards,
full paths. With no success.
Did you run into the same problem? please let me know how you fixed it if
you did.

Re: system params for Solaris on TSM upgrade to 4.1.2.0

2002-04-19 Thread Sjerps, Marco

Dale,
Which solaris version are your running 7 or 8

Don't forget to apply the various patches for each.. Platform and server..

set rpcmod:svc_default_stksize=0x4000
this parameter caused some panics here with out the patch for the solaris
this is resolved by the big patch for your solaris version ..

I'm getting kernel panics on reboot after upgrading to 4.2.1.0 on Solaris.
Once we remove the changes that the README says are required to /etc/system
the machine runs ok...

Anyone seen this before?

Here's the message from the admin:

Here's the section of my '/etc/system' file that appears to be causing the
