I am in the process of moving it. AWS or whatever is running on the AWS is
getting progressively more and more flakey. So, I have put it off long enough.
Domain will move to GoDaddy and the list will move to mailmanhost.com
Will probably take a few days.

everyone is just outside as opposed to in front of a computer like me.

Pros
Buzz

Cons
Dick stops working, even the next day
Ugly women look good to you
You hit on ugly women
You can fu*k up your ability to get insurance or a drivers license
Hangovers
Puke mouth
Kissing a puke mouth
Beer goggles
Beer gut
Puking
Cleaning up Puke
Screwing your buddies wife
Waking up in jail for no apparent reason
Waking up in your car not knowing where you are
Waking up not knowing where you are
Discovering you bought many rounds for the whole bar on your credit card
Waking up with a new girlfriend that you don’t know.
Learning you were making out with a totally fugly girl that is old enough to be
your mother.
Puking in public venues before thousands of people
Waking up face down in a bathtub thinking you are dead because all you can see
is white.
Did I mention that your dick stops working...

We had a glitch switching over to “normal headers” with Amazon. We are putting

Re: [AFMUG] List issue

2015-01-12 Thread Ken Hohhof
I resubscribed to the afmug list with a dedicated email address. If I forget
and post from my main email address, that’s what happens, it silently
disappears. Of course, if I reply to a post, my email client automatically
uses the correct From address.

So first thing I would check is whether the email address you are sending from
is the one you are subscribed with on the list.

The email addy I was using before (since the AF list was the part-15
list)... so many years worked fine until Amazon SES got in the way and
proclaimed that our email server was not DMARC-compliant.

My posts to the list would go IN (they show up in the AF archive), BUT
they would not go out.

Sounds exactly like the problem you're having.

So check the AF archive and see if your emails are going in. If that;s
true, you need a DMARC-compliant email server.

Re: [AFMUG] List issue

2015-01-12 Thread Ken Hohhof
I don’t follow what you mean by DMARC-compliant. I thought DMARC was a way for
a domain owner to specify what to do if an email purporting to be from that
domain fails DKIM or SPF checks. Were you sending from your own domain, and if
so, what DMARC policy is specified in your DNS records? Or were you sending
from a major email provider like Yahoo or AOL that had started publishing a
DMARC policy of reject? I think I saw that was causing a problem with some
lists.

I send from my own domain through my own domain server, and have done nothing
about DMARC, yet I have no problems. If there is something you must do to make
your mailserver “DMARC compliant”, I doubt I have done it.

If you were sending through your own mailserver from a Yahoo or AOL address,
yes that would cause a problem.

The email addy I was using before (since the AF list was the part-15 list)...
so many years worked fine until Amazon SES got in the way and proclaimed that
our email server was not DMARC-compliant.

My posts to the list would go IN (they show up in the AF archive), BUT they
would not go out.

Sounds exactly like the problem you're having.

So check the AF archive and see if your emails are going in. If that;s true,
you need a DMARC-compliant email server.

Re: [AFMUG] List issue

2015-01-12 Thread Bill Prince

We don't host our own email servers; never have.

The company that provides our email mangles the from address to some
generic email address, or alias within their email system. Like this:

   Jan 4 22:10:27 ip-x-x-x-x postfix/qmgr[2576]: DBC50A0A90:

*from=

<mailto:SRS0=fEDV.t=BX=skylinebroadbandservice.com=part...@yourhostingaccount.com>*,

We've asked several times for them to correct it, but they never have.
It's never been an issue, until Amazon SES came along.

Anyone thought about using something like slack as an alternative to the email
list. Maybe there is a good reason for the email format but it seems like it
would allow for categories for topics so members could choose if they want to
be in on the topic or not. Such as fiber topics. Cambium topics. Mimosa ubnt
and sync. Lots of options to make it more topic specific to what each list
member is interested in. I know my attention span sometimes gets lost on things
that don’t involve my work. Maybe slack isn’t the beat choice but there is
surely something like that to fit the group needs

Here is the problem that comes around every so often.

1.Slack is the wild Wild West. Get more than a few folks in a channel and the
conversation gets crazy. It’s a conversation not a thread. Imagine some of the
threads that have gone off the rails in realtime.
2.Message boards are good but the are not pushed to you like e-mail
3.Facebook is pushed to you, but not everyone has facebook or pays attention to
it.

As much as people keep wanting e-mail to die, which I don’t understand, it’s
not going away anytime soon.

I'm not sure what script the mailing list runs on, but if it uses port 25
it gets throttled by EC2. (Use port 587 or 2587 instead)

Now the From is

"Colin Stanners via Af"

which I think is actually worse, since that's your name but not your email
address, it's bound to cause problems. Plus now we have the double replies,
to get your actual email address to show up somewhere.

I think Mike is right, we need the standard list behavior, where From: has
the sender's email, and both To: and Reply To: is the list address. If that
is something Amazon prohibits, it's an annoyance for sure and maybe a deal
killer.

Relax... what's on TV? How's your network doing? Take a selfie, watch some
funny Cat videos :)

Many tweaks will be made today :)

  Now the From is

  "Colin Stanners via Af"

which I think is actually worse, since that's your name but not your email
address, it's bound to cause problems. Plus now we have the double replies, to
get your actual email address to show up somewhere.

I think Mike is right, we need the standard list behavior, where From: has
the sender's email, and both To: and Reply To: is the list address. If that is
something Amazon prohibits, it's an annoyance for sure and maybe a deal killer.

Re: [AFMUG] LIST: Overnight adjustments

2014-09-16 Thread Paul McCall via Af
Seth,

I don’t disagree with what you are showing in your attachment. However, the
user by itself doesn’t show as the From under Outlook or Gmail, which shows
af@afmug.com (on behalf of Josh Reynolds ). It simply
shows the person's name as the sender (as it does now)

It is not immediately possible (or needed IMO) to show that "on behalf part" in
the same way. When you click Reply, it replies to AF@AFMUG.COM like it did
before.

I think we are talking about subtle "shades" as far as that topic goes. We
haven’t looked at Thunderbird yet, and that may change our opinion..

One step at a time :)

Thanks for your continued input Seth!

Paul

Sure it was. The "From" header is very clearly the sender's email address. See
attached screenshot of a random header sample.

I wasn’t looking at the header info, I was only looking at what we normally see
when using Outlook, or Gmail, or Hotmail or AOL. Again, we will continue to
look at the entire scope and aren’t trying to force anything down anybody's
throat.

At this point though, to characterize the list as "broken" is a bit harsh, IMO

Respectfully,

Paul

Pulled a header sample for Bill; I don't agree, it looked like this (see
attachment, no "on behalf of"). My educated opinion is that the new list is
still broken.

I don't think I'm being harsh. The headers on this new list are jumbled
up in a way that's contrary to generally accepted mailing list behavior.
As a technical person it's plain broken; how clients interpret the
combination of headers with List-* headers to pretty-print things for
the end user is not an indication of "working".

The yardstick for "fixed" vs. "broken" should not be how things appear
on the surface, but found in the headers. The References aren't working
to thread. The "From" header is wrong. The envelope sender isn't the
list manager. But if everyone accepts it then whatever, I won't waste my
energy.

Re: [AFMUG] LIST: Overnight adjustments

2014-09-17 Thread Forrest Christian (List Account) via Af
I would argue "broken, but tolerable based on the use of SES in the middle".

The From: address should be the sender.
The Reply-To: address should be the list.

The way the headers are now you cannot see the email address of the sender
at all. This is wrong, but I'm not sure what they can do about it with the
way it is currently architected.

SES being in the middle here is the problem. SES requires a lot of
specific items to ensure that it isn't used to send anonymous spam. The
most aggressive one being the requirement that each and every from address
is verified on their amazon account. And worse, it expects the
capitalization of those from addresses never to change, and so on. SES in
the middle isn't the right architecture choice, but apparently it was
necessary for some reason.

I'm expecting the realization that SES is actually charging per-message and
for data transfer to lead to SES being pulled out of the equation one way
or another. I have dug some and I sure don't see any way around the SES
pricing...

2014-09-17 Thread Paul McCall via Af
Thanks for the input. The dust has not settled on it yet and we fully
expected to deal with some of this when it went live :)

There is a lot of thoughts, technical discussion, etc. that I could spent a lot
of time on, but I want to be clear that we would rather focus time (at the
moment anyways) looking at the different options on improving it. Since we
have had to "my mail server is having trouble with your mail server" general
connection issues, its not a huge deal for us to look at continued options.

Steady plodding (as the bible says), which in the tech business translates to
persistence and patience (not necessarily in that order)

:)

Re: [AFMUG] LIST: Overnight adjustments

2014-09-17 Thread Adam Moffett via Af
How often do you guys go back and find something from your 40-90 gigs of
email? When you did need something, how successful were you at finding
it? I gave up trying to keep everything after realizing that I almost
never wanted anything older than 6 months, and if I did then it took an
inordinate amount of effort to find it.

I sort important things into foldersif I didn't sort it then it
probably wasn't important. Everything in my inbox older than 6 months
gets deleted.

I like it for most things. But nothing is very good at gracefully handling
my 40 GB mail archive.

LOL, that has been my issue for a few years now. Have just over 92 GB
in my Kmail, close to 800 folders (many nested) and the _only_ mail
agent I have found that deals with it is Kmail (Linux KDE).

Re: [AFMUG] LIST: Overnight adjustments

2014-09-17 Thread Ken Hohhof via Af
That's strange, the sent mail was in HTML format with highlighting, but what
came back was plain text. Does Amazon not allow HTML? Or did I mess up?
Or is a listserv option set to convert everything to plain text?

Re: [AFMUG] LIST: Overnight adjustments

2014-09-17 Thread CBB - Jay Fuller via Af

Often. Very often. I regularly search keywords. Over the weekend i was
looking at fiber conversations from when people started running fiber 2-3-4
years ago. I use it often. Did I say often? :)

Same with our business - i am regularly referencing accounts and info from
pre-powercode days. Using an email search
Granted on windows mail it can take a while. There are two searches - one is
an "indexed" search which is supposed to be quick but i've found is only about
20% accurate. I'll typically use it first. The advanced search (ctrl-f i
think it is) will find every friggin thing ; sometimes it will even find false
matches.

I often find myself finding one or two hits that are "relevant", i'll then read
that message, then read the whole thread by subject.

My email client (WLM) displays what's in the header, I would assume
that's typical. What else would it display?

I was responding to your statement that the From address wasn't the
sender on the old list either. It was.

Yes, I agree that was in the header. I was referring to function
(displayed

FROM field and the replied TO field). Sorry if I wasn’t clear. That was
part of a longer conversation that explained the context

Matt,

I looked at all the threads for the past few hours, and I see who it is
coming from each time.

However, it does not show their email address... we can add that back
into
the body of the message I believe. That is how we had it yesterday,
but the

upgrade "undid" that.

Thanks!

I have also fixed the annoying 'Reply To' issue, where it was
replying to

the original poster AND the list.

It now only reply's to the list.

Often enough. I move all the stuff annually into an archive for that

LOL, that has been my issue for a few years now. Have just over 92 GB
in my Kmail, close to 800 folders (many nested) and the _only_ mail
agent I have found that deals with it is Kmail (Linux KDE).

Very often, use it weekly if not every other day or so.
Hit rate is about 100% of things that actually exist in my email.
As Adam stated, sometimes get "false" positives if I do not
specify the search very well (ask for anything that contains radio
in the body and you get a LOT of hits)...

Everything (just about) that I have is in folders. And some folders
of folders (EG: This list is under a Maildir folder labeled 0-Lists.
There are currently 32 other folders inside that one (ietf, nanog, cisco-nsp,
etc).

In my case we do a lot of gov (local, county, 911, etc) support and I often
have to go back one, two or even three and four years and "remind"
them what was discussed and what we agreed to do (or not)...
