Re: [AFMUG] Cellular One approach to WISP

2018-02-07 Thread Justin Wilson
Keep in mind the Cellular one brand did not translate well into fixed wireless.
I saw that first hand. It was easy in the cellular market. There needs to be
a ton of standardization for things to happen. We have a co-op here in
indiana, but everyone uses different equipment, different authentication
methods, different billing systems, different etc. etc. LTE removes some of
these barriers, but its still an issue.

Danville Illinois was one of the last holdouts of Cellular one. They had fixed
wireless even after the sale to ATT. It was so outdated and slow they just
abandoned. They just told customers it was getting shut off. They offered no
alternatives.

We also used X-Stop and loved it. They did a phenomenal job with their
service, and we actually made good money from charging for our
"filtering" service (especially to school districts and large
businesses). Each customer had their own "control center" and could
make adjustments, add exceptions or specifically block a URL. It was
pretty amazing software for it's time. :)

Some random thoughts.

If you are going to an HTTPS site, it is all encrypted. If you are
attempting to analyze a flow of traffic HTTPS traffic looks the same to us
whether it is porn or online banking.

Do we also block Bit Torrent?
XBox Grand Theft Auto
Any game with online chat. Scrub online chat during games?
All game servers
Twitter
Instagram
Youtube
News outlets
Facebook
Email
Instant messaging
Periscope
Streaming
FTP
IRC

The lowly ping facility has a space for payload. I could send porn via
pings if I wanted.

What is defined as harmful content? Medical, artistic, Bible readings?
Genesis 19, 29 etc etc.
Language, if so what language? Bare shoulders. Knees?
Curtains blowing in the breeze.

How about what I consider pornographic music lyrics.
Do we have to police music. Police Pandora.

There are always ways around.
For every block there is a proxy or VPN that will get you around it.

Filters can give parents a false sense of security. Filters are gimmicks.
Snake oil.
But we do offer them. Not home grown. They are 3rd party.

2018-02-07 Thread chuck
Rather than buy bitcoin, I think I will buy some real estate situated for
building a recreational pot store at some point in the future

At least the land will retain some value.

(This is Utah, that alone should tell you how likely that is to happen).

I think that is what might happen in CA legalization. The sum of all the
state & local taxes now amounts to about 35% (might be off slightly in my
memory). But the point is, it leaves a lot of room for a black market.
Sure, the retail price of pot is about 50% of what it was, but we shall see.

I have several friends & relatives that make their own beer. It's fun, and
you can do some interesting "experiments" that might not be commercially
viable. I also have one friend that made his own still, and is making an
interesting corn liquor. Very small quantities. Kind of fun, but not for

I used to make beer when I was a kid. I grew pot too. Easier to grow pot than
it is to make beer.
In the 1970s pot was decriminalized in Oregon. Everybody that wanted to smoke
had grow lights in a closet somewhere.

I think that is what might happen in CA legalization. The
sum of all the state & local taxes now amounts to about 35%
(might be off slightly in my memory). But the point is, it
leaves a lot of room for a black market. Sure, the retail
price of pot is about 50% of what it was, but we shall see.

Re: [AFMUG] OT Porn ..... (filtering)

2018-02-07 Thread Josh Reynolds
If you look at the rest of the world, many seem to believe the US has
this really weird Puritanical view of the world where gory violence is
100% okay, but you must be at least 18 years old to see a naked human
being.

And they're not wrong.

 Some random thoughts.

If you are going to an HTTPS site, it is all encrypted. If you are
attempting to analyze a flow of traffic HTTPS traffic looks the same to
 us
whether it is porn or online banking.

Filters are
 gimmicks.
 Snake oil.
But we do offer them. Not home grown. They are 3rd party.

Hum. Interesting paradox...imposing religious ideals on people...where have
I heard and seen that before?
Hypocrisy at it's finest. In this country you can choose to believe in a
turnip as your supreme being for all I care. Que pinchi mamadas!

That's probably because we, as a culture, do have a really weird
puritanical view of the world :)
