Re: [arr] god rocks in tamil the most

2010-01-20 Thread Srini
Yeah, even I don't like it.

Also, I think more than the language, it's the team that matters more.

That's why most fans have equal expectation for a Tamil or Chinese
album, but the expectation is greater when it comes to a Maniratnam or
Ashutosh G movie - it's the chemistry, the presentation and importance
they give to the music in their movies that make them extra special
for the fans.

Cheers,
Srini

Re: [arr] need ar to do a horror flick soon!!!

2010-01-20 Thread Srini
I strongly agree. Horror / thriller movies depend heavily on the
background score and I wish to see Rahman sir bring in a fresh scare..
I mean air into this genre.

But then we shouldn't be expecting 7 songs in a Thriller movie. Just BGM.

And I am sure the person who writ these are
1. Either paid to
2. Or they have listened pirated version

4. Or they just want to differ

Imagine how they would have treated SDM music if it was an Indian

Although despite Oscar some musicians did treat it as amature work...
And they just want to differ... Any press is good press for these folks.

[arr] Rahman's song NaNa shortlisted for Oscar nomination

2010-01-20 Thread A.R.Rajib
Rahman's song NaNa shortlisted for Oscar nomination
   [image: AR Rahman]
Rahman is a composer with a staggering range

*Indian composer AR Rahman has been shortlisted for an Oscar nomination for
his Tamil song NaNa from the Hollywood film, Couples Retreat.*

The song is vying with 62 others for the nominations which will be revealed
on 2 February.

Rahman won two Oscars, a Bafta and a Golden Globe last year for his
soundtrack to the multi award-winning film, Slumdog Millionaire.

The composer is often called the Mozart of India.

*'Really touched'*

Couples Retreat is a comedy film directed by Peter Billingsley and Rahman
says it is his "first mainstream Hollywood movie".

"Normally a person who picks up double Oscars, doesn't pick up a comedy
movie. But I thought it would be less pressure to pick up a comedy film,"
Rahman told a press conference.

"The makers of the movie [actor] Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley
[director] came to me before I had won any of the awards and said they were
moved by my music and it will be an honour to have my music so I felt really
touched and accepted the movie."

The film stars Vince Vaughn and is about five couples who land up in an
island resort.

"It's a comedy and the music is kept very low. And they used the song as the
background score," Rahman said.

"The good news is that the song NaNa has been shortlisted for the Academy
awards. I don't know whether it will make it, because we didn't go for
promoting it; but that's a good sign."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8469758.stm

See .. Even BBC saying NaNa is a Tamil Song ... Do we have problem in our
ears ???

I share that opinion. Seems that is why I have not included him yet in
the list of my favs.

Comedy songs also become hit, technically amazing songs also become
hit, but what makes a composer beloved of the listeners is thru songs
that touch the heart of the listeners.

Bringing this thread back to ARR, there was a time when people had
started saying "ALL ARR SONGS SOUNDS ALIKE." Of course, those
listeners had not given enough time for these songs to grow on them to
understand the difference, but, let's remember that listener is the
king and the end judge. So, when the Latka Jhatka, maya machindra
telephone pole Hindi lyrics of Hindustani combined with a music that
has technical wizardry more than it had melody, listeners didn't feel
like exploring it at all and rejected that. Since those days, ARR has
improvised in many ways so that no one now says any bad thing about
ARR's music.

I think Amit trivedi also has to improvised in similar way. Dev D's
music was more a comedy. It is not a drawback of Amit, it is just that
the movie needed such type of music and he has given that. He may be
having capability to give melodious heart touching songs, but, that is
yet to be shown. Gulal is an example where compositions were melodious
heart touching, kudos to Piyush. Amit Trivedi has to do films having
this genre of music to get taken seriously. currently he is and MD for
the hip-hop-pop generation.

Since this is released by Sony Music, they may be added this track which is
originally composed by flutist Naveen for his debut album "fluid" for the
same company. Its a mix-up.

[arr] UTV launches Delhi-6 on iTunes

UTV launches Delhi-6 on iTunes Story By: BUSINESSOFCINEMA.COM TEAM updated
on: Jan 20, 2010

MUMBAI: UTV’s Delhi-6, co-produced and directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
and starring Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor has been launched on iTunes.
It is the first Indian film to be made available on the iTunes online store.
Delhi-6 is featured on the store in the New and Noteworthy film section and
is available at $9.99 for download-to-own.

The music of Delhi-6 has been composed by A. R. Rahman with lyrics by
Prasoon Joshi.

UTV Motion Pictures USA VP Lokesh Dhar said, “Entertainment is witnessing a
surge of consumption in the online space therefore more and more fans are
surfing, looking for movie related content on the internet. Hence, launching
Delhi-6, the complete film, on iTunes was a perfect fit as not only does the
film appeal to all alike, but is another step in UTV’s endeavor to set
trends and not follow them. We are extremely proud that Delhi-6 is the first
Indian film on iTunes.”

Delhi-6 was released in theatres worldwide on 20 February, 2009. Delhi-6 has
been screened at the 66th Venice Film Festival, Bangkok International Film
Festival, and 29th Annual Hawaii International Film Festival, among others.

[arr] I'm very confused about something.....

2010-01-20 Thread ichord
I've checked various VTV reviews abound, and not all reviews are full throttle
positive, which is fine. People are entitled to their own opinions. But, one
word that I'm seeing being thrown around by some on the web to describe some of
the music on VTV is "amateurish".

Am I missing something? The music of VTV to me is very mature, thorough,
thoughtful, deep, intricate, purposeful, and very crafty. I don't know based
on what type of perception that some people are coming up with the word
"amateurish." If it was just one person who used this word, I wouldn't care to
mention it and wouldn't care in general, but it's a word used by several (won't
mention names or websites to avoid off topic discussions). Someone just
recently described the music of "Hosanna" as amateurish. Huh?

Can anyone throw some light onto this? Does anyone else feel this way? If you
do, that's fine, I would just like to know why you think so.

Can Gopal or the regulars on the group fish out information as to when was the
FIRST BGM uploaded using the Yahoo group ?

I found a message number 5221 sent by Kailairajan Kailasanathan on November 30,
1999 informing uploading Mudhalvan BGM on ARR FTP...

In that case let's celebrate ( belated ) 10 years of BGM extraction through
this group in which so many have contributed, Such as Wassim (Kaissom), AJ,
Vithur, Aravind, Prathap and many such Rahmaniacs ( please excuse me as I know
I have missed many names )

We must thank all of them for unwrapping a priceless treasure of Rahman's
music. Dear BGM team, Thank you !

I think I have all BGMs collected through this group and listening to these
BGMs gives a rare insight into the movie and ARR's ability to make the scene a
memorable one. And they do make a unique mobile phone ring tone !

THE BEST BGM according to me > SWADES !

[arr] Aaromale is far, far ahead as fav VT V song!!!

2010-01-20 Thread ichord
Looks like we have a winner in Aaromale as fav VTV song as the othere are not
even close to its number of votes. Second most voted so far is Mannipaya,
followed by Omanna, Anbil Avan, then Hosanna. Surprised that Hosanna is 3rd
lowest so far, given it was the lead song of all the promos and probably will
be the most commercially successful. Goes to show how strong this album is
with every song being picked as a favorite! Still time to vote if you haven't
yet.

[arr] Visual effect

2010-01-20 Thread raamkumar vaidyanathan
Music has a visual element in it. And, Oscar winner A R Rahman is trying his
best to make sure that his songs get good visual treatment in the movies he
works in. “I’m very concerned about the visual treatment,” disclosed Rahman,
releasing the soundtrack of Couples Retreat, “My fans get very agitated when my
work gets wasted. I get angry e-mails asking me why I worked on films that
don’t utilise my songs properly. I’m actually cool with it, but my fans
aren’t!”

Rahman described the experience of working on his first mainstream Hollywood
film as “fantastic”. “I enjoyed doing Couples Retreat because of the freedom I
got,” he said, “Also, the budget - in terms of orchestra — was flexible so that
I could get exactly what I wanted, musically.” The Mozart of Madras also had to
slightly change his work timings to ensure that work finished on time. “I
worked on weekends too,” he said with a smile, “That was funny!”

Later, talking exclusively to CT, Rahman stressed that he did not want exotic
names when he was composing music for Gautham Menon’s Vinnaithaandi
Varuvaaya. “I particularly did not want to use new singers just for the sake of
it,” he said, “I wanted the local bunch of singers to go to the next level, and
that’s why I used most of them in this album. Of course, Alphonse — who sang
the Malayalam song — was an exception.”

  The
song Aaromale in Vinnaithandi
Varuvaayaa
has gained immense popularity
already
and has been topping the charts.
Due
to this, the film's director
Gautham
Menon has decided to shoot the song
with the lead pair - Silambarasan
and Trisha.

With the director deciding on
filming
the song, Trisha has given a call
sheet to facilitate an early
release
of the film. VTV is slated for a
February
release and with this song the
shooting
schedule is expected to come to an

end.http://www.behindwoods.com/tamil-movie-news-1/jan-10-03/gautham-menon-vinnaithandi-varuvaayaa-20-01-10.html

[arr] Your favorite parts of the Sydney Concert?

I assume most here have seen the videos of the Sydney concert, right? It not,
please do check out the whole concert here:

http://www.youtube.com/user/4topcats#p/u/21/HoFokPHlGBM

Many, many, many many thanks to those here (like Srini) who to took the time to
upload the videos, direct us to links, etc.

One of my favorite portions of the concert (wish I was there in person), was
during the transition between the Antara of "Tu Hi Re" to the beginning of
"Udhaya Udhaya" The Antara of "Tu Hi Re" and the whole song of "Udhaya Udhaya"
share raaga Charukeshi and the transition was just magical for metotally
taking me by surprise, and the way Sadhana Sargam entered was just awesome.

"Udhaya Udhaya" is one of my all time favorite ARR songs and I'm so glad it was
in the concert, even briefly

I used to buy all Tamil/Hindi CDs from Southall when I used to live in London.
But now buy it online. VTV is already available on iTunes UK as well as Amazon:

these sources just want to use rajini's name to gain revenue/publicity. they
are devoid of any actual news. almost every source is like that when it comes
to rajini. the date of release is July and has come from horse's mouth.
this bogus news needs to be trashed.

Rahman is gold standard. And I will compare anybody who wants to make it with
the Gold Standard. So i would make no apologies in saying that Amit Trivedi has
the potential to be the Rahman of the future.
This endorsement does not take away from Rahman's worth, it adds to
it...everyone aspires to be like or better than him.

hmm who is comparing him to ARR? He has been composing for movies from last 2
year only and Rahman is international celebrity; been in industry from 18+
years. Dont you remember the article where he picked top 10 ARR albums, plus in
almost all of his interviews he talks about him being fan of ARR.

So far I have loved both of Amit's albums and Iktara, but he still got a long
way to go. Many music directors get success in early stages of their career but
find tough to carry on. Ismail Darbar, Monty Sharma, Mithoon are few good
examples..

[arr] 10 years of BGMs on Yahoo group ?

2010-01-20 Thread DineshVaidya

Best regards

[arr] omana penne - piece of crafted art

2010-01-20 Thread sunanthvn_1986
at first when i heard omana penne, i instantly liked it since it has a simple
tune.but then after repeated hearings, i can't get out of loop. The flow of the
song and the instrumentations is masterly crafted.
The simple tune gets intense from about 2:00 and then at 2:09 it changes its
mood, then the malayalam bit, everything goes well.
at the end the nadaswaram was a treat.the highlight moment of the nadaswaram
bit was at 4:39.I was blown away by the abrupt transition.
wow... what a song..

[arr] 2010: KOLLYWOOD’S YEAR AHEAD-AR Rahman's Ye ar

2010-01-20 Thread Gobi Kanadasan
2010:
  KOLLYWOOD’S YEAR AHEAD

The time has come to look
ahead.
2010 has set in and brings
with
  it a whole lot of
expectations
and hopes. What else will we
  be looking forward to other
  than the biggest movies of
the
  year and other events that
relate
  to cinema? Sports buffs will
be over the moon this year as
  there are many top notch
international
  events waiting for them
including
the T20 World Cup, the IPL,
  the FIFA World Cup, the
Hockey
  World Cup, the Commonwealth
  Games and other regular
events
of the calendar year. Add to
  that the excitement that is
  brought about by the return
  of Michael Schumacher to F1
  racing. We can promise Tamil
cine buffs that 2010 is going
to be no less exciting for
you.

Yes, Pongal was not the usual
  star studded affair in spite
  of some very interesting
releases.
But, the star march starts in
  early February with Ajith
appearing
in Asal, his 49th movie. But,
2010 will not be about the
49th
movie, it will be about the
half century of two of the
biggest,
  young (relatively) stars of
Kollywood. It is going to be
50 for both Vijay and Ajith.
While Vijay is on his way
with
  the shooting for Sura
progressing
  fast, Ajith is yet to
finalize
  his plans though there are
pretty
  strong indications that it
might
be Gautham Menon who gets his
  dates. Sura is definitely a
  2010 offering though the date
  has not yet been announced
and
  Ajith’s 50th too is expected
  to be ready before 2011
begins.

  Just imagine, what have been
  said above are the relatively
  smaller things as compared to
the real big draws of 2010.

[arr] Re: (non arr) Some song recommendations

2010-01-20 Thread Rivjot
hmm who is comparing him to ARR? He has been composing for movies from last 2
year only and Rahman is international celebrity; been in industry from 18+
years. Dont you remember the article where he picked top 10 ARR albums, plus in
almost all of his interviews he talks about him being fan of ARR.

So far I have loved both of Amit's albums and Iktara, but he still got a long
way to go. Many music directors get success in early stages of their career but
find tough to carry on. Ismail Darbar, Monty Sharma, Mithoon are few good
examples..

Re: [arr] A R Rahman - Very *** Music Composer!!

2010-01-20 Thread Yogesh Korde
Putting such subject line should not be preferred.
We all love AR and his music but overall Hindi film industry music
has been always on better plane.
We had great MDs like Naushad,SD Burman,Salil Chaudhary,Khayyam,Madan Mohan
OP Nayyar and Shankar-Jaikishan.
All of them have tried to provide their best.
When you have great film makers, great lyricists and great singers along with
great MDs the era is sure to be called as 'Golden Era'

But AR is person who has given altogether new dimension to music and is
considered among 'Best'.We are fortunate to born in Rahman's Era.
Definately AR is on top of our list [and will be]..but we should always listen
to other good MDs as well because Music is not confined to any single artist.

nomination. all 5 nominees are kind of locked to be from the below 7.

The Weary Kind – Crazy Heart
I see You - Avatar
All Is Love - Where The Wild Things Are
Almost There – The Princess And The Frog
(I Want To) Come Home – Everybody's Fine
Cinema Italiano – Nine
Winter - Brothers

“There has been very encouraging demand for the tickets and we are

of Eventful told Gulf News.
The concert is organised in Muscat by Eventful and Ovation. The

Enthiran music in April

IndiaGlitz
 [Wednesday, January 20, 2010]

As the D- day is nearing we have more on Endhiran
coming out. Now it is about the theme music. AR Rahman who is working
on Endhiran songs from London has completed the theme music first at
the behest of director Shankar. The theme music comes where ever the
Robot Rajni appears. Shankar will plan and film the visual sequences
based on the music. The story boards for the sequences are being
readied at a frantic pace by the team of Shankar.
Apart from its music Endhiran is also is special for
its choreography by Prabhu Deva, lyrics by Vairamuthu, art direction by
Sabu Cyril and cinematography by Ratnavelu. Another specialty will be
the exclusive sound effects crafted by the Oscar winner Resul Pookutty.
Pookutty creates the unique metallic sound effects for the Robot
charcter.
Other than the Endhiran team there is one more
person who very closely following Endhiran developments right from its
scratch. That is the chief minister M. Karunanidhi. He had already
enquired about the release date to Rajnikanth many times.
With plans perfect Shankar has allotted six months
only for the graphics, animation and other special effects. So the
release may be pushed little further than previously expected. Our
sources tell us the music will rock in April and the film is a Diwali
pleasure.
