Re: Adding status reason column to overview console

2013-06-12 Thread Steve Kallestad
I just took a peek at a 7.6.4 environment and it's already mapped there as
well.

Look for multiple records in SHR:ARDBCFields where MAINHELPDESK/100150
is mapped and slim it down to the one provided out of the box.

Then try adding in the field "ConsolidatedStatusReason" into your table and
see if it's not populated for you already. If it's still not populating a
server restart couldn't hurt and you definitely need to flush the MT cache.
In the thick client clearing the arf/arv files is always good too.

Sounds to me like you've done everything right except maybe running into an
already-mapped field.

OK I am not on 7.6.04 but I bet this is the same. Make sure the you use the
field "Status Reason Hidden"_ because Status Reason is a display only field.

Subject: Create Date later than $TIMESTAMP$ from filters

**
In light of the other thread about Create Date vice Modified Date I ran into
something along similar lines today an wondered if anyone else has seen
something similar. We have a set of filters that put $TIMESTAMP$ into date/time
fields, one per status value (i.e. if there are five different status values
there will be five date/time fields). The qualifications on the filters are
such that if the status changes to that value (i.e. if ticket changes to status
value 2 then the Status 2 Date/Time field is used) and sets $TIMESTAMP$ into
the corresponding date/time field.

The strange behavior that I am seeing is that these status date/time values are
all exactly one second older than the value in the core Create Date field. My
assumption is that $TIMESTAMP$ is evaluated during the filter processing but
the Create Date field is not populated by the server until probably the very
instant before the record is actually committed to the database; if filter
processing takes too long then the clock might tick over into the next second.

Has anyone else run into this dilemma? It is only a problem for me because in
reporting any tickets that have say the Work In Progress date/time less than
the Create Date field then it is out of compliance and we have to massage the
data for multiple tickets after the fact. In a recent check I found that there
were 796 records where the status date/time fields were less than the Create
Date but only four of them were more than one second older (obviously due to
unrelated issues).

The obvious quick & dirty fix for this (which may not be optimal) is to modify
the filters to set the status date/time fields to $TIMESTAMP$ + 1 so that they
either match the Create Date or might possibly be one second later but I wanted
to investigate the root cause before touching any existing code.

I see that field as already mapped which *might* be a problem. I've never
tried to map a field to multiple columns. I'm not looking at 7.6.3 right
now though.

Generally when I'm having trouble doing this I'll do a SQL log and see if
the field I'm looking for is being queried for. For me it's always a
simple problem - like forgetting to flush cache, misspelling MAINHELPDESK,
or the wrong number of 0s in the Field ID.

Re: Create Date later than $TIMESTAMP$ from filters

2013-06-12 Thread Joe D'Souza
Exactly - which is why your custom filters having processed that 1 second
earlier on occasions have a older time stamp by a second after which the
record gets submitted where it gets all its core information which includes
user stamps, time stamps and the request ID.

Has anyone else run into this dilemma? It is only a problem for me because
in reporting any tickets that have say the Work In Progress date/time less

Update -- solved.

We changed the api code to use the timestamp from the last_modified_date
field and all is well.

We were not taking advantage of the api call where you can set the
last_modified_date field.

First, let's review what the logic of the system is.

 ** **

Create-date is completely uninvolved in the discussion here.

Modified-date is the date that is significant.

 ** **

 What occurs is the following:

 ** **

A record is created. The create-date and modified-date should be
identical because the time of create and

the time of last modify is the same at this point.

 ** **

A record may be modified, in that case, the create-date is unchanged,
but the modified-date is updated to

 reflect the new date.

 ** **

This defines the records we may be interacting with. There is no
difference in handling regardless of which

 scenario above was used.

 ** **

Now, we get to the logic around updates.

 ** **

The server gets an update request. It has no clue about when you may
have last touched it or when you

retrieved it because there is no state information in the server.
There is a parameter to the API that the

client program sets to indicate "when did I retrieve this record". THAT
value is the one the server uses in

its check. It tests the value that the client gave it to see if the
record was changed since that date. It checks

 the Modified-date (C4 is the Modified-date, C3 is the Create-date) in
 the test.

 ** **

Now, in the current version, it also tests the Last-modified-by field
and if it is the same user, it will not return

the error (because YOU are the same user so it is not modified by a
"different" user). There is also ignoring

of things like AR_ESCALATOR or maybe configurable ignoring of that user
I think so you don't get warnings

about things escalations are the one who changed but I am not sure
about that and that is not the focus of

this explanation. Now, I thought that the user test was also in 7.6.04
but I cannot remember for sure what

version it was added in. Again, just clarification, not critical for
 this explanation.

 ** **

You can specify a time of 0 for when it was retrieved to indicate you
don't want the test for whether changed

run at all and just to modify the record without testing.

 ** **

In the clients supplied by BMC, we either put 0 for that time if we
 didn't retrieve them

Re: Recent Searches

2013-06-12 Thread Downing, Ryan
Hi Christie,

Try this.the easiest way to do this would be to create a new filter "On
Submit" of a new AR User Preference" record (at execution order 999 or 1000)
that sets the value of the "Number of Recently Used List" to '9'.

This way you are not modifying the OOTB template code or data. You are creating
an overlay to do what you need it to do.

Hope this helps.

Ryan.

is set, as that would be the true create date stamp, at the time the Request
ID is created.

Just a guess - I have noticed such differences of a second too but didn't
question the difference as it seemed too insignificant to the business
processes that I have had to track in my experience.

Subject: Create Date later than $TIMESTAMP$ from filters

In light of the other thread about Create Date vice Modified Date I ran into
something along similar lines today an wondered if anyone else has seen
something similar. We have a set of filters that put $TIMESTAMP$ into
date/time fields, one per status value (i.e. if there are five different
status values there will be five date/time fields). The qualifications on
the filters are such that if the status changes to that value (i.e. if
ticket changes to status value 2 then the Status 2 Date/Time field is used)
and sets $TIMESTAMP$ into the corresponding date/time field.

The strange behavior that I am seeing is that these status date/time values
are all exactly one second older than the value in the core Create Date
field. My assumption is that $TIMESTAMP$ is evaluated during the filter
processing but the Create Date field is not populated by the server until
probably the very instant before the record is actually committed to the
database; if filter processing takes too long then the clock might tick over
into the next second.

Has anyone else run into this dilemma? It is only a problem for me because
in reporting any tickets that have say the Work In Progress date/time less
than the Create Date field then it is out of compliance and we have to
massage the data for multiple tickets after the fact. In a recent check I
found that there were 796 records where the status date/time fields were
less than the Create Date but only four of them were more than one second
older (obviously due to unrelated issues).

The obvious quick & dirty fix for this (which may not be optimal) is to
modify the filters to set the status date/time fields to $TIMESTAMP$ + 1 so
that they either match the Create Date or might possibly be one second later
but I wanted to investigate the root cause before touching any existing
code.

Re: OT: Are Any Materials Shipped for WWRUG?

2013-06-12 Thread arslist
It sounds very fishy indeed.

We ship no materials before the conference to attendees, and almost
everything goes straight to the conference center anyway.

I will take this as a heads up that if for some strange reason we do for the
first time, we should warn people as well.

We have quite a few sponsors signed up already, the presentation kiosks are
already sold out for the conference, the papers will be posted to the web
site very soon, and I hope to have our line up of Keynotes settled by the
end of the week (not counting any surprise attendees during the conference).

Although I have only seen some of the papers for this year, they looedk like
a stunning group and we have [more] panels this year for longer fuller
discussions of some topics.

Cheers Daniel

I know that one of the addresses associated with WWRUG is in Canada, so I'm
wondering if maybe they used a Canadian shipping company that we don't have

There's a Get and Print Receipt button that I'm not about to click unless I

just assumed last_mod would be the same.

We are not really setting/dealing with the last_modified date/time --
however I suspect the Java API holds that data internally in the
EntryObject… so when we update the EntryObject with our new field
name/value pairs I suspect the last_modified date/time is contained in
there and is passed along.

The fundamental thing we are looking at is -- is our problem client or
server side?

With the info you gave - I suspect client side -- since no changes or
manipulation or state info is stored server side.
(We were sort of wondering -- since we never explicitly set the last_mod
date in our update call. So - did not even know where that was coming from)

We have had lots of transactions happening with this code -- however - have
only seen this issue at this one customer and the "odd thing" was the 8.0
client api and 7.6.4 sp2 server. So -- sort of jumped to that area. Also --
replaced with 7.6.4 client -- and it did not come up again (but eventually
did). So -- throws a wrench into that thought :)

However -- the fact that nobody else said "me too" … is also helpful.

Will do some more digging - and return the findings…

I think you're right Paul, now that you mention it. Forgive me - it really

Hej, just annoying I think when a form has a visible name in the user

And, db name is often the same as label, but sometimes a total different

Re: 8.0 Java API to 7.6.4 server - update records issue

2013-06-12 Thread Mueller, Doug
First, let's review what the logic of the system is.

Create-date is completely uninvolved in the discussion here.
Modified-date is the date that is significant.

What occurs is the following:

A record is created. The create-date and modified-date should be identical
because the time of create and
the time of last modify is the same at this point.

A record may be modified, in that case, the create-date is unchanged, but the
modified-date is updated to
reflect the new date.

This defines the records we may be interacting with. There is no difference in
handling regardless of which
scenario above was used.

Now, we get to the logic around updates.

The server gets an update request. It has no clue about when you may have last
touched it or when you
retrieved it because there is no state information in the server. There is a
parameter to the API that the
client program sets to indicate "when did I retrieve this record". THAT value
is the one the server uses in
its check. It tests the value that the client gave it to see if the record was
changed since that date. It checks
the Modified-date (C4 is the Modified-date, C3 is the Create-date) in the test.

Now, in the current version, it also tests the Last-modified-by field and if it
is the same user, it will not return
the error (because YOU are the same user so it is not modified by a "different"
user). There is also ignoring
of things like AR_ESCALATOR or maybe configurable ignoring of that user I think
so you don't get warnings
about things escalations are the one who changed but I am not sure about that
and that is not the focus of
this explanation. Now, I thought that the user test was also in 7.6.04 but I
cannot remember for sure what
version it was added in. Again, just clarification, not critical for this
explanation.

You can specify a time of 0 for when it was retrieved to indicate you don't
want the test for whether changed
run at all and just to modify the record without testing.

In the clients supplied by BMC, we either put 0 for that time if we didn't
retrieve them or we put the
retrieve time that we got from the GetEntry call (there is a time of retrieval
in that call that we use as that
ensures we are using SERVER timestamp and not client timestamp to eliminate
issues with clock drift between
client and server).

So, this is how everything is designed to work.

Now, I have not worked directly with the API for a while and am more familiar
with the C API where this time
value is an explicit parameter to the call. I am not sure how it is set in the
Java API.

Scenario 1 - Is your code creating and then modifying the entry? Where do you
get the timestamp you are
using to pass to the modify call for when the entry was "retrieved"? Since you
are not doing a "get" of the
entry, the server cannot be giving you a server timestamp, are you using a
client timestamp of when you
created it and if the server clock is a second or two different (ahead) or the
entry is created over the
boundary of a second since you saved the timestamp You can see the problem
you are having.

Scenario 2 - Is your code "getting" the entry that was created by someone else
and then updating it? If so,
what timestamp are you using for the "retrieved" time? Are you using the
client time or a time returned from
the "get" API call? see above for issues if it is the client time.

Scenario 3 - Are you worried about whether the entry has been changed by
someone else since the time
you retrieved it? If not, why aren't you setting the retrieved time to 0 to
eliminate the test that is done on
the modify as you don't need the test run, you are just modifying without
checking if someone else has
changed the record.

We have seen absolutely no issue with any program that is using the Java API
correctly in this area. We have
hundreds of customers using 8.0 and 8.1 programs and mid-tiers against 7.6.04
(and 7.6.03 and 7.6 and 7.5
and ...) servers and none have reported an issue in this area. And, as you
have found, it isn't about the 8.1
API as the issue occurs when using 7.6.04 as well.

Now, there is always a chance that no other customer has encountered an issue
with any of their programs
and there is something wrong in the code. It is software and you can never
discount things. But, the logic
around this area has been stable for many releases and there have been no
reports of problems.

Do you fall into one of the 3 scenarios I noted above? Should you be a
scenario 3?

But, regardless, it is modified-date that is involved so create-date is a
distraction. And, one second off is
no kind of an "off by one" error within the API/server as there is never any
manipulation of the date, just
what date and from where is used. There is no processing of the data value
itself.

I hope this helps explain the process that the system uses and points to some
ideas for solution within your
code.

Re: How much RAM does an AR System thread use?

2013-06-12 Thread Campbell, Paul (Paul)
This is where Server Statistics are your friend, as you can watch the thread
count growth over time to get an idea of peak thread counts, watch the growth,
Identify times when more threads are needed (End of month List Count Jumping up
for reports), etc. We found that when we moved from a Solaris 9 zone to a
physical Linux server, our initial thread counts at startup was way too high,
as the counts never really grew above the initial numbers, we set the start
numbers lower without changing the max numbers and got much better performance.

About the destroying of threads, if I remember correctly, once a
List/Fast/Escalation thread is created, it is not destroyed until a server
restart (barring a thread crash) because of the cost of destroying the thread
and then needing to recreate it later was greater than leaving it idle, Keep me
honest here Doug Muller.

I don't know the details of AR System threading, and I might be stepping a bit
outside my bounds of knowledge but...

I agree with Sean that the memory usage for a particular thread when spawned
should be insignificant.

The more threads are active on a given system, the more the OS needs to cycle
through each thread to see if it is ready for processing. Modern CPUs are
capable of managing multiple threads simultaneously, but the limit of how many
can truly be processed at any given time is pretty small.

When the limit is reached, the OS will iterate through the running threads
based on priority.

With the AR System, the number of threads that you have will increase
performance up to the point where you hit the limit and start to see a
diminished in performance because the CPU is spending more time selecting
threads than processing them.

That's a little bit simplistic and doesn't really account for blocking /
interruption / IPC, but it's at least a simple understanding.

The AR System separates it's types of configurable threads into a few different
purposes - Fast / List / Admin / Private / etc.

It's been quite some time since I've had to do thread configuration for
performance purposes, but if you want to go beyond the basic recommendations
it's more a matter of your traffic patterns than anything else. You want to
have a balance between the number of idle threads and your end user's activity.
Idle threads are created ahead of time so end users don't perceive a
performance issue because new threads are being created. Thread logging will
show you when threads are being created and when threads are destroyed because
they are idle or when there's an unrecoverable error. If I'm not mistaken,
Misi has a tool to analyze and make recommendations for thread counts.

Sun used to produce numbers for how many threads an individual CPU could
reasonably process. I don't think Intel ever put out those numbers and I'm not
sure Sun does anymore.

I honestly think this is a much lower priority issue these days than it once
was. You could do some testing by looking at memory usage at startup for an
arserver with various thread counts and run performance tests, but personally I
don't look at optimizations like this unless I'm experiencing a problem or I'm
going through a formal performance optimization cycle. There is always the
strong possibility that your end user activity will change, and it will change
from day to day and week to week. If you try to squeeze out every ounce of
performance from a system at the end of the month when everybody is running
reports, your configuration is going to look a lot different than if you tried
to do the same thing on the 7th.

I could be remembering wrong, but I think once upon a time the queues were
processes and not threads (way back in the 90s). I could be thinking of apache
httpd, but I think ars did the same thing. At that point optimization of
queues was a much bigger deal.

Just my two cents. Not sure that I added much to the discussion :).

2013-06-12 Thread lars . j . pettersson
Yes, I will try misi's tool. The helptooll will check for open objects when
removing a team member from a support group for exampe. To just remove if
he/she has open inc, problems, changes sems wrong to me, first close or reassin
the ticksts,, then remove..the user, the helptool is 100% besides itsm module.

Re: How much RAM does an AR System thread use?

2013-06-12 Thread Steve Kallestad
I don't know the details of AR System threading, and I might be stepping a
bit outside my bounds of knowledge but...

I agree with Sean that the memory usage for a particular thread when
spawned should be insignificant.

The more threads are active on a given system, the more the OS needs to
cycle through each thread to see if it is ready for processing. Modern
CPUs are capable of managing multiple threads simultaneously, but the limit
of how many can truly be processed at any given time is pretty small.

The AR System separates it's types of configurable threads into a few
different purposes - Fast / List / Admin / Private / etc.

It's been quite some time since I've had to do thread configuration for
performance purposes, but if you want to go beyond the basic
recommendations it's more a matter of your traffic patterns than anything
else. You want to have a balance between the number of idle threads and
your end user's activity. Idle threads are created ahead of time so end
users don't perceive a performance issue because new threads are being
created. Thread logging will show you when threads are being created and
when threads are destroyed because they are idle or when there's an
unrecoverable error. If I'm not mistaken, Misi has a tool to analyze and
make recommendations for thread counts.

Sun used to produce numbers for how many threads an individual CPU could
reasonably process. I don't think Intel ever put out those numbers and I'm
not sure Sun does anymore.

I honestly think this is a much lower priority issue these days than it
once was. You could do some testing by looking at memory usage at startup
for an arserver with various thread counts and run performance tests, but
personally I don't look at optimizations like this unless I'm experiencing
a problem or I'm going through a formal performance optimization cycle.
There is always the strong possibility that your end user activity will
change, and it will change from day to day and week to week. If you try to
squeeze out every ounce of performance from a system at the end of the
month when everybody is running reports, your configuration is going to
look a lot different than if you tried to do the same thing on the 7th.

I could be remembering wrong, but I think once upon a time the queues were
processes and not threads (way back in the 90s). I could be thinking of
apache httpd, but I think ars did the same thing. At that point
optimization of queues was a much bigger deal.

Just my two cents. Not sure that I added much to the discussion :).

NO, they would NEVER put something into the code base that they don't
document and put in the release notes, would they?

Yes...I would certainly recommend getting to SP4...it is by all means the
most stable of all of the 7.6 releases.

Re: How much RAM does an AR System thread use?

2013-06-12 Thread Longwing, Lj
I think the question was based on Remedy/Peregrine/BMC's long standing
statement of

"You don't want to allocate 'too many' threads, because each one comes with
a memory/cpu cost, so your thread counts need to be a perfect balance to
allow proper performance, but not utilize too many resources"

So, from that standpoint, it's a fair question of "ok...what is the 'cost'
of each thread so I can figure out if I have enough resources to handle the
cost"

And - since I posted -- the problem showed up with client 7.6.4 libraries

But -- on close inspection -- the time stamp used on update is one second
older than the timestamp on create. So -- definitely funky.
(I would call it a server bug -- but I can't be sure)

So -- 7.6.4 patch 2 server… reading the 3,4 update logs -- nothing jumps

May just update anyway -- maybe a change happened in the code - but did not

It was my understanding it uses a shared pool of memory. Each thread probably
uses a small almost insignificant amount except when large queries are run,
etc. If it runs right you will see it double in memory during caching
scenarios and go back down to ~1-3 gig.

The only problem with that logic is that the server has always been in

8.0 Java API to 7.6.4 server - update records issue

2013-06-12 Thread John Sundberg
We have recently seen a sporadic issue with the 8.0 Java API against a
7.6.4 server…

The issue is -- a record is created at 2013-06-10T12:00:00 … (call this
123456789)

However

when the record gets updated…

The log shows

update T1 where c4 <= 123456788 ……

(Notice - the one second less than the create time)

So I think what is happening is that the client library is somehow losing a
second (off by one error???) on the update. So - the update fails with
"This record has been updated since you last touched it"…

However -- if you drop in the 7.6.4 client library -- it works fine.

So … 8.0 client bug ??? or something else?

Re: Mass Remove Application Permissions

2013-06-12 Thread Joe D'Souza
Lisa,

You can provided the objects you select has the same set of permissions.
Even if one of the objects selected has one different permissions, you will
not be able to do what you want to. So you will need to perhaps do it in a
few passes by identifying fields that have similar permissions.

Cheers

Joe

Re: ARERR 102 : Remedy Version 7.5.00 Patch 004

2013-06-12 Thread Joe D'Souza
My guess is your server is probably UNIX and you have done a non root
install and have not completed the post install steps of manipulating the
directory location of the catalog files. Complete that step and the
associated message that Longwing shared with you, will display instead of
complaining that the message is not in catalog. Currently your system has no
access to that catalog because you have not done your post install steps
which are necessary.

Creating symbolic links to the locations these files need to exist and
adjusting the file permissions so that the non root user starting the AR
Server service should suffice.

Cheers

Joe

Kiran, the documentation should have reflected that change more

In 8.1 form properties can be seen Under the 'Definition' Tab at the Bottom
Left corner of the form where all views starts, like Default View etc.
This change has made to control the form properties and their granularity
levels effectively.
