Another example of thoughtful analysis regarding a complex issue. In response to an article about the closing of Camp La Guardia and the effects of closing that shelter, (Click here: Shelter Closes, Residents Move on and Fortunes Diverge - New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/12/nyregion/12camp.html ), the president of The Partnership for the Homeless wrote this letter to the editor. Not what most might expect from that organization. Homeless in New York (1 Letter) To the Editor: Re Shelter Closes, Residents Move On and Fortunes Diverge (news article, June 12): Camp La Guardia was always a sad symbol of our city's failed strategy to deal with the systemic problems of homelessness. Its closing couldn't happen soon enough. And while shelter still remains a critical safety net, it's certainly no substitute for real, long-term solutions that address root causes. So we congratulate Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg for finally shutting down this facility, which simply warehoused more than 1,000 men on any given night, seemingly punishing them for being down on their luck or for struggling with the challenges of mental health or other disabilities. But let's make certain that the closing of this shelter is truly a signal of change. For a mayor who rightly seeks to understand the metrics of his strategies to assess their efficacy, success here should be measured when we're able to show that for each shelter bed eliminated we've taken that savings and created units of low-income affordable housing. [AsburyPark] Fountain in Library Square Park Vandalized AGAIN!!!
One week after the fountain in Library Square Park was vandalized, it has happened again. This morning, I found the remaining globe was found destroyed and thrown into the fountain, along with an assortment of trash. Last week, I reported this to the police, the AP Historical Society and Jim Keady. Jim Keady sent me an email about it and said he'd bring it up to the council. He also asked for my phone number stating that the city manager wanted to discuss this with me. So far i've heard nothing. Nothing from the AP Historical Society, who did not answer my 2 emails about this. I'm going to try one other thing. I'll call the parks dept and see if they've even heard about this. I'm also tired of complaining about it, so tomorrow night at 7 pm, my girlfriend and I are going to clean up the fountain ourselves, and anybody who'd like to join us is welcome. We are also going to plant some flowers. Of course, there are no cameras anywhere, so it's likely that our work will be for nothing and the fountain will be damaged and used as a trash dump again. In discussing this with my girlfriend, she was shocked that there are no cameras anyplace in the city. She's a tough chick, a state animal control officer, and she told me that she's scared to walk my dog in the park after dark...in fact she's afraid of the city in general at night...which is shocking to me considering the things she's dealt with in her life. Now that I know more about this, it really saddens me that the APHS spent so much money to try and improve the park, only to have some idiots ruin it. I know that hind sight is 20/20, but the park, at least for as long as i've been here, is dark at night and an easy target for a place to do bad things in. Now that the fountains lights have been damaged, that leaves very little light in the park at night. It would be in the best interest of AP to at very least make an effort to get the lighting in the park working. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, dfsavgny [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Hinge hinge98@ wrote: Here's a link to the article from The Coaster about last weeks vandalism; http://thecoaster.net/wordpress/?p=1454 APHS and the city should get an estimate to do the renovations and video camera surveillance in one fell swoop. Sure sounds like he is encourging them to enter the country illegally to me. While there are laws the penalize companies for employing illegals, they are simply a slap on the wrist. If you really want to stop it, then throw the employer in jail instead of fining him. Agreed. When can we start? The father of one of my daughters students just got deported for being undocumented. That is the correct term, not illegal. Semantics. Under NJ Law, drunk driving is not a felony so it is not designated as a crime. It's still illegal. So is being here against the immigration laws. So now the mother is stuck here with her many children, all of whom were born in this country, without support. Anchor babies? If so, that's a huge loophole in our immigration laws that needs to close. BTW, the husband has never been in trouble with the law and works. Me too, but the President isn't offering me amnesty for not paying my income taxes. A century and more ago, American businesses advertised for workers in Europe. That is how many of us came to be. America has an historic love affair with cheap labor. Agreed. A certain political party argued in the 1860's to keep slavery for economic reasons. Now both parties are trying to keep a permenant, low wage slave class here too, at the expense of working class Blacks who can't ask for a living wage. Many of the illegal Mexicans aren't intrested in a living wage - they live 30 in a house, send the money back to Mexico and retire there in a few years because the exchange rate is so favorable. Don't take my word for it. Read up on Cesar Chaves, a left wing hero who organized the fruit laborers in California. He was a constant fighter against illegal immigration from Mexico because it allowed employers to not pay a living wage to American workers. Can't we learn from our own recent history? I am not condoning the johns' actions, although I certainly can sympathize with some of their likely plights of being in a strange country all alone without a mate after working who knows how many hours all to send some money home. The unwillingness to assimilate is their problem, not mine. Prostitution is a problem here in AP for other reasons. End our suspense.. The insanity of making it illegal. Will we never learn? There is no job in America where the workforce is more than 27% illegals (most are much less than that). So in all jobs, Americans and legal aliens are doing the work at 3x the rate as illegals are, and in most cases by a far greater percentage. There is no job in America that Americans won't do. The problem Americans are having is that they have to compete for wages against illegals who are not trying to assimilate, rather make money to send back home and return thereafter. Tommy, I am surprised that a conservative like you would not support laizze faire. Do you want wage controls? No, I want fair competition. How can an American Black laborer demand a wage that allows him to buy a home, get his kids an ipod and a bike, send his kids to college and have a nest egg for retirement when an illegal will work for cheap because he is living 30 in a house and sending every penny back to Mexico so his familiy can live well there and he can go back in 10 years and retire? He can't. It's unfair competition. Let Americans compete against those that wish to stay here. I had a mexican doing work for me and now he owns his own company. Was he legal or illegal? There have been studies looking at the growth of the US economy over 150 years. The economy always grew faster after great waves of immigration. Interesting info, but useless to the current situation. Nothing like we are experiencing right now has ever happened in history, so history is no guide here. First of all, the extensive welfare state is much younger than 150 years. No country has ever been asked to handle this many foreigners at one time, educate them, give them healthcare, welfare, etc. Consider some numbers. After America was formed, the two largest groups of immigrants from Europe are Germans, followed by Italians. There are more illegals STANDING IN AMERICA RIGHT NOW than all the Germans and Italians that came here combined over the past 225 years. We have more foriegn born people STANDING IN AMERICA RIGHT NOW than all the immigrants who came here combined in the 350 years from 1607 to 1965. Some assert the number of illegals crossing the border is as high as 2 million each year. Gov. Bill Richardson of Arizona says his state sees 4500 illegals cross the border EVERY DAY. No one knows if American can bear this weight. All of these people cannot simply be deported. Most can be. Lets start with the approximately 70,000 that arrive each year with felony records. It is probably the only thing on which I will ever agree with Dubya. President Bush's failure to secure our borders in a time of war is a gross dereliction of his Constitution duties (not to mention a failure to ensure domestic tranquilty, as I would expect poor Blacks in partuclar to rise up against this economic war being waged upon them). If failure to secure our boarders are grounds for impeachment, don't expect me to stand in the way if the Democrats try. How do they or anyone rise up? Education. I'll enroll them in school when they land here legally. The jews who emigrated here always knew the answer. The answer was assimilation. I don't recall them demanding any street signs, applicaitions or 411 calls in yiddish. Yahoo! Once again, I'll stand beside Tommy on an issue most people probably wouldn't believe a liberal would stand beside a conservative. I look at it this way. We have had waves of immigration from Germans, from Italians, from Chinese and other nationalities. The difference is that the current wave is simply not assimilating in any way of the previous waves. And for good reason. As Tommy points out, it's easy to have 1 or 2 million Germans or Italians learn the language but when you have 10-20 million of a different language come over at the same time there is less reason to assimilate - especially when we run ads in print and tv in Spanish and allow businesses like bodegas to be completely in Spanish. This is far different from having a Chinatown that's a block long. Belmar, just ten years ago, didn't have a single bodega. We now have 3 within a 5 block area. I have nothing against that (and personally love Spanish food); however, I do think America would be better off having an official language as I do see many problems for the country in the next 5-10 years and I don't see the assimilation or desire to be part of the melting pot that previous immigration waves showed. This immigration wave is very different. If you don't believe that, please show me a part of America where my German ancestors still speak solely German. I doubt there is such a place.
